I only had Vista (It came with my new acer computer that my dad bought me) for a cople of days now, but I have been having trouble with it also, mainly internet connections. i am still trying to get used to it. i do like that gadgets you could get for the side bar. That was a really cool idea, though some gadgets are not recomended to be downloaded. As for the updates, I wait until my computer tells me what to update. i do not go searching around the internet for updates because you do not know who to trust. Some of the updates are not helpful and some can even be scams to get your information. If the updates you found, asked for a lot of personal information, do not download them.

as for the cleaner, your computer should of had a free trial of Norton. If your trial has ended, you could go on their website and sign up for another free trail. I also downlaoded the free version of Advanced WindowsCare on download.com.

You can ignore the optional language pack updates, as those are for multilingual interfaces. Downloading the important and recommended updates is fine, but for recommended, go ahead and read what the update is for (there's an information link for each update), as there are some most people won't need.
One important tip: unless you're having problems with your hardware, I do not recommend installing any hardware drivers from Windows Update. If you ever need to update your hardware drivers, get them from your hardware manufacturer's website.
