I'm not sure how "regular" I am. I certainly know more than most people, but I'm not a professional or anything like that.
You question is very broad & open-ended. I'm not sure where to stop & where to end.
I became obsessed with the subject of autism when my brother moved to town with his 4 kids, TWO of them with autism! Low-functioning autism. This is where I've gotten most of my interest. I know some things about Asperger's but I know a lot more about Kanner's.
Autism is a complex condition & varies widely from individual to indiviual, therefore the best treatment will vary as well.
I believe much, but not all, of the autism "epidemic" is just from changes in the diagnosis criterea & improved diagnosis. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqR2aep4IiI_zl2U.7Ay2CTty6IX?qid=20070209150055AAwBAy2&show=7#profile-info-mDzRpxtQaa

I get frustrated with the broad use of the term "autism." I wish people would refer to "Aspergers" or "Kanner's" more often. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtRyXt095b4SiK5GkLPqDunty6IX?qid=20070213204445AA38AYc&show=7#profile-info-heRt1I2Daa
The broad use of the term leads to the "Autism doesn't need a cure" mentality. I support that way of thinking for those who are high-functioning, but my niece sure could use a cure! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Al7aTnDYFYaKhJWibokbYh3ty6IX?qid=20070204200238AABSp5A&show=7#profile-info-AA11247439
Autism is more likely in children fathered by older men. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AoPDLZju7NYnDkLWUIiggm_ty6IX?qid=20070325102538AAml5qB&show=7#profile-info-d9567b0787a20449c968e98b1851d837aa but that is complicated. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhZQFmJaJUfpdaPXh_5QKPrty6IX?qid=20070312122742AAqjvAR&show=7#profile-info-d9567b0787a20449c968e98b1851d837aa
I don't give much credence to the notion that autism is caused by vaccinations. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Anv3Ej3c0uWeORcTuSlj.8Tty6IX?qid=20070224203507AAneU6u&show=7#profile-info-XaVCCG3Naa

Autism has a strong genetic component but it is not 100% genetics. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ai1sBAyWVuZJH2t_RNXqgOrty6IX?qid=20061207202957AA1y4hD&show=7#profile-info-8751711e28db31f88cb81d405f5d9ed6aa
Many great people had autism, but people are claiming some people (like Lincoln) had autism without much evidence. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AheNqXjwvFwdWU55Bldvv2Hty6IX?qid=20070212161012AAkRjtz&show=7#profile-info-EiyOUX05aa
And it is a mistake to assume all people with autism are anti-social. "Socially impared" would be a better description. My neice loves being around people, as long as they don't get too loud. She is very affectionate, but only on her own terms.

My brother is autistic, it is a conditon that runs mainly in males, Autisim is a spectrum, everyone is on it, but genrally males are more autistic that females.
Someone who is autistic has difficutly communicating, for example they cant understand facial expressions or body language very well, and things have to be said clearly so as not taken the wrong way for example if I were to say, Im going to paint the town red, my brother would think I was going to get a tin of paint and actually paint, not that I was going out for the night.
People who are autistic are genrally very smart, have great memories and are especially good with computers, maths and science.
Autistic people also usually have one thing which they like a lot, and obsesse about it, it can be about music, football, trains, radios or anything else, they usually collect things like that.
Some Autistic people are worse than others, and people who are on the high end of the autistic spectrum wont communicate via speech at all.
I actually think that in some way it is heredrity as everyone of my male cousins and my brother suffer on my mothers side, but all the girst are OK. Now that Autisim is understood, I feel that my Grandfather also had many of the symptoms although not diagnosed.
I dont feel that more people have it now a days, I think that its just understood better, which means more people can be diagnosed properly.
My brother suffers from Aspergers syndrom which is a type of Autism, but he was not properly diagnosed until he was 21, he is now 30.

properly, you notice the e book we are all assume to flow with the aid of does not say autism spectrum ailment. It says autism under Pervasive progression ailment. yet, this e book is amazingly out-dated, and a lot of have created many diagnoses and words not yet standardized, meaning there isn't any modern-day policies on them. to that end, all and sundry is going around asserting that PDD and asperger's are autism spectrum issues by using all and sundry extremely familar with the autism term. So. for this reason there is the contradictory. all and sundry is very doing their very own element. This epidemic is growing to be a lot greater rapidly than the government and different regulatory companies can save up. in actuality, autism spectrum ailment is at present usually concerning a distinctive PDD, or PDD-NOS and Asperger's. while one has autism, it somewhat is often in basic terms talked approximately as autism. however the present way autism is being defined, it somewhat is an autism spectrum ailment. So, you could say it somewhat is an identical element, different than autism spectrum ailment is being talked approximately as one in all a number of diagnoses.

I think that it´s when a person has too much serotonin in the brain. I also know that some doctors suggest that maybe consumption of fish during pregnancy can contribute to the cause of Autism (because of the mercury in the fish). I think is extremely misunderstood, and I think its cool that you are trying to learn more about it; maybe when you´re done you will be able to enlighten other about it. Good luck!

I think autism is way too broadly used to descibe many pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs). I'm not sure that I believe it is caused by mercury or immunizations. The symptoms of autism vary so greatly...such a broad spectrum...it seems unlikely that the same thing that causes a child to be a piano prodigy, yet totally unable to cope with society could cause another child to be incoherent, mentally retarded, and flap their hands and walk on their toes.

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects social interactions among other things. My friends' little girl was diagnosed with autism a few months ago. She's 20 months old, and her vocabulary consists of only one word, dada. She won't play with her older brother, doesn't like to interact with people too much. She won't eat anything but baby food, they've been working on introducing new textures to her, but she only gags. She's a very sweet little girl, but she pulls away from hugs, and doesn't make much eye contact. This is what I have learned from my contact with her.

Autism is a condition that I believe is primarily brought on by mercury poisoning in vaccines administered to children (but it is not limited to this). It is also characterized by low magnesium absorption. People can suffer at different levels ranging from being highly functional to non-functional regarding certain situations. Their brains process information differently than non affected people and therefore they respond to situations differently. They also may have certain triggers that affect them...i.e. some can not tolerate loud noises or crowded areas. Many find comfort in repetition regarding actions or patterns they see in life.

i think it is a problem of brain damage in utero and that it can be handled with behavior mod therapy. Most of the subjects are extremely bright and can be trained to pay attention and not do repeated movements like twidling.
