I like the Virginia/Highlands area. It's just an intersection with some stores and restaurants, but it's a start. There's also Little Five Points, which used to be hip, then new wave, then punk, then green, then skinhead, then all mixed.
The NE part of town around Emory Univ. should have some cool places to hang, and Buckhead is fancy and always moving, but it's a bit spread out, so look in Creative Loafing newspaper and try some places that have cool looking ads.
Here are some specific places from Let's Go USA, a student written travel guide:
Fellini's Pizza, 909 Ponce de Leon
East Village Grill, 248 Buckhead Ave.
Buckhead Diner, 3073 Piedmont Rd.
The Flying biscuit, 1001 Piedmont Rd.
Nicklemoto's, 990 Piedmont Ave.
Doc Chey's, 1424 N. Highland Av.
Everybody's, 1040 N. Highland Av.
Majestic, 1031 Ponce de Leon
Manuel's Tavern, 602 N. Highland
LuLu's Bait Shack, 3057 Peachtree Rd.
Apres Diem, 931 Monroe Dr.

Atlanta doesn't really have much in the way of places to simply hang out. Usually, there's something involved. You might want to take up a new hobby or sport, that will give you plenty of places to hang out.
Consider taking up scuba diving, golf, tennis, or swimming; all are very popular in Atlanta, and you'll meet lots of people. Also, you might want to look at doing some volunteer work. The Georgia Aquarium needs volunteers, along with many other places like hospitals, animal shelters, YMCA, and Boys and Girls Clubs.
When I was single, I lived in the downtown area. I avoided most places I did not know well at night unless I had company. I did like hanging at Manuel's Tavern, but I don't know what it's like now. Overall, I strongly suggest taking up a new sport, you'll enjoy the hanging part a lot more if you have something in common with the folks you are with.

You can always hang out in Piedmont Park. It is a great place to spend a saturday afternoon. Midtown is a great area as well as the Virgina Highlands. Avoid walking downtown alone at night - especially around underground atlanta.

i don't be attentive to the place you're coming from or what form of residing you're used to. yet a number of those stats might ask your self somebody from a small city or a rural placing. None of your stats ask your self me and that they do no longer preclude me from residing right here interior the city the two. Atlanta is a super city. The crime information flow alongside with that. in case you appeared on the different great city i do no longer think of it may be any different. No section is thoroughly immune from crime. i don't be attentive to if it extremely is the undesirable economic device or merely a demonstration of the cases. shop those stats in attitude with the aid of evaluating them to the inhabitants. Buckhead might record some destroy ins and petty theft crimes yet there are 5 million human beings residing right here. those stats might destroy right down to a million for each 2 hundred,000 citizens. those are surprisingly low odds. For the main secure factors you will could flow exterior the fringe into the northern suburbs, factors like Duluth, Marietta and Alpharetta. yet which will placed you 30 miles away out of your college and with little to no public transportation innovations.
