JP2 apologized on 11/23/01, and again on 7/28/02.
Benedict ordered a priest suspected of abuse to be defrocked and retire to a life of repentence on 3/21/06.
Benedict didn't so much apologize as rail on those who performed the abuse on 10/28/06.
These articles are below.

As to why the sex abuse cases in the US don't occupy more of the Pope's speeches, the U.S. doesn't have as large of a role in the mind of the Vatican as Americans think it does. The sexual abuses are sensational in the U.S., and much hyped by the media, even though they are and have been a real problem. Under the hype, any additional talk only prolongs the damage that has been done, casting a pall on those who are innocent (ie, there were several incidents of vandalism here in St. Louis after allegations were announced against a local priest).

As for those who perpetrated the abuse, I shudder to think of the punishment they will receive at the Judgment.

Of greater concern to the Vatican:
* the advance of militant Islam
* the persecution of Christians in China, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, India and Indonesia
* ongoing conflict and famine in Africa
* relief efforts in the Pacific Rim following typhoons

Papal States leave the matter in the Bishop's and Arch-Bishops hands. Contrary to popular belief, when these law suits take place, it is not the whole Catholic Church who pays but the papal state that the crime was committed in.

What I wanna know as a USA citizen is why the US govt says to the Church pay 1 million per victim and then they've got their "Boys Club" protected (Senitors, Congress men, Teachers, Home land security officers, Police officers, and any other PUBLIC employee) protected by saying that a sexual molestation is only worth $50,000.00 IF (and only IF) the molestation is reported within 180 days.

WTF ... why does a victum or sexual molestation from a Priest deserve $1 Million while the boy who was "Groomed" by a Senior (who was head of an apporpriation commitee to stop internet molestation) get $50,000??? WTF ... Why? IMO victims should have equal opportunity to have satisfaction. The scary "Boys club" is the govt. since it's not making penance.

I can't recall any Pope taking on this problem personally. If there is a God he does not give a damn about the Pope or the child molesting priests, it's up to catholics to put pressure on that church to clean up it's act, once and for all. Replace all male priests with women.

And why is it that almost every single allegation is over 30 years old? Did the priests suddenly stop, or are many of these allegations BS? Money talks, and BS walks.
