the German short haired or wire haired pointer, griffon and pudelpointer are all excellent versatile breeds. depending on the climate you live in you will want a longer haired breed to match the cold in northern parts of the continent.
i have had pudelpointers and a German wirehair and i could not have asked for better dogs. i have seen them break ice to get to a duck or pheasant and keep coming back ready for more. i have hunted with a friend that has a griffon and was thoroughly impressed.
here is a link to the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association. there are a lot of very useful links as well as information on breeds that would suit your needs.

the best dog for the purposes you need is a Labrador retriever. it will retrieve any waterfowl in any water. it will hold a point just as good as all the spaniels and other traditional upland dogs. and Labrador retrievers are VERY good family pets and are great with kids.
your second choice would have to be a mariner. it is generally a better upland dog, but it will retrieve waterfowl. the difference between it being used for waterfowl or upland is very slight. wiermaraners are not as good with kids, but they are not hostile.

remember that either you get it is a companion and a friend first and foremost. if you treat it with kindness, it will respect you and love you.
good luck

Poodles are well known for water fowl so are retrevers (black) just be sure to get a puppy and break him or her in to the loud shot so the dog is not gun shy, older dogs can be extremely nervous just by the site of a gun let alone the bang. You know the saying old dog can't learn new tricks, well thats a fact in several ways.Unfortunitly my black Lab passed away yrs ago she loved the water, wasn't gun shy and man she could retriev.Good luck and i apologize about my spelling, happy hunting.
