Is it true that you have to run like 4 miles everyday? Do alot of people quit? During your experience, did you ever see really overweight people enlist and complete basic training? Im curious about all of this because im leaving in a month for basic training and i really want to know what to expect... Thanks for all your comments in advance..

First off, basic training is not designed to fail out anyone. There is virtually zero chance of you failing basic training for any reason.

As far as the running goes, it depends on your MOS and whether or not you'll conduct your AIT in conjunction with you basic training. Either way, they'll work you up to it. You won't be pushed beyond your bodies capacity to endure. You'll find, in basic, that you're capable of much more than you previously believed.

Third, really overweight is a pretty vague phrase, but I've known lots of people who have been overweight when they netered basic, and plenty who are overweight (by army standards) for a long time afterwards. There aren't many more effective ways to lose weight in America than the Army or Marines physical training.

I remember looking hard for books and articles on basic training before I came in, 4 years ago. After going through, I thought about writing one for folks that felt like I did. When it all comes down to it, there's not much to write. Basic is a lot of fun. It's exciting. It's hard. You may hate it at times. It'll push you more than you've probably been pushed before, but you'll look back on it and remember some good times. Email me if you'd like to talk more.

I was in the Army in 2004 i went to Fort Jackson South Carolina (relaxin' Jackson ) for BCT and i didn't run 4 miles everyday we didn't even run 4 miles in matter of fact we ran 2-3 miles tops early in the morning in the streets of South Carolina. Lots of soldiers couldn't keep up at times because they where out of shape so they would fall behind but our motto was " One Team One Fight " and it's part of the soldiers creed " i will never leave a falling comrad ". So we always went back for them. Lots of soldiers got in shape in the Army and they did complete BCT while others got new started or recycled to another battalion to complete the phase there meaning they didn't graduate with there platoon. You'll be staying in a hotel the night your sceduled to leave any way. Like lets say your suppose to leave August 4th you'll leave August 3rd and stay in a hotel over night but first you'll go to MEPS and take another physical such as urine pretty much the same stuff as before except quicker.Than you'll do some paper work don't forget to bring your highschool diploma or GED with you to MEPS without it you'll be delayed from going anywhere and you'll stay in the hotel an extra night. After all that's over you'll go to MEPS the next day and you'll get your plane tickets and meal tickets so you can eat all the junk before you go because in BCT you won't see you favorites.Than you'll board your plane or planes i had to take two planes. Once you get to your destination you'll get to reception not BCT there you'll get shots 6-7 and your uniforms paper work dog tags and you'll learn how to dress your uniform and how to do the bed hospital corners and if you wear glasses or contacts you won't be allowed to wear them you'll get Army glasses BCG's ( birth control glasses ) there big like bottle cap glasses and there ugly. and a small taste ofthe Army then about a week later if your not delayed you'll go to BCT and start at week 0 it doesn't count more paper work and a real taste of the Army. At reception they'll assign you a platoon for BCT by putting the number of the platton on your green duffle bag the number you get is the platoon you go into. There are three phases red white a blue phase red is victory tower and all day obsticle course also Army the basics and you'll get you M-16 you'll learn how to take it apart and clean it towards the end. white phase is weapons qualification and blue phase is victory forge. if you pass you'll graduate good luck Army Strong

Don't worry Drill knows his job big baby he'll make that but eat salad until he or she is nice and right.

You have to meet a height and weight factor you will be able to do it. The runs are cool and good for you. Sometimes depending on your assignment you may run 5-8 miles.

Peace

I saw many overweight people come in, but I swaw very few overweight people go out.
They either lost the excess weight, or just plain were sent packing.

You have to meet height/weight requirements before joining... So everyone that gets in is reasonably fit...
