My kids are younger (10 and 7) and this is what I've done. First, the computer is in a spot where I can see it, and I look often and let them know I'm looking. (This is important for when they have friends over) You can check the history for sites that they have visited. I know my kids passwords for everything, and I also have things set up for my email address to be the one that sites send notices and password changes too. As for their messenger I have the message history saved to a spot on my desktop so I can read it at will, and they don't know.

If your kids are older, chances are you don't know their passwords and that can make it a little harder if your not very computer literate.
They have programs now that will tell you every single button that was pushed and people don't know it's there....if you want to go that route.

First thing would be to set up a myspace account and have your kid add you as a friend. And checking the sent items on their email is good monitoring too. You should familiarize yourself with any chat rooms they participate in and set the security setting on your browser to high. Make sure than you are the only one with admin rights on your computer and set up a password on your computer so that your little ones can't go in and change your settings back. Set up a master profile for you and a user profile with limited capabilities for your kids.
EDIT: All you jerks telling her to trust your kids are SMOKING CRACK!!! It's not about trusting your kids, it's about online predators. Trust them if they EARN it. Otherwise kick the little boogers off the computer. They need to be aware of the dangers of online pedators. Have any of you watched dateline? There are sickos out there that prey on kids. If you kids think you know it all then prove it and move out of your parents house and get a job!

If you know less than your kids do about computers.....I suggest you take some classes and catch up.
click on tools, internet options, browsing history then settings, in there you can view the visited websites and delete them if you want to. Be aware, most kids know this and delete the history at the end of each session, if they have something to hide.

a good program to use is a "Key Logger" it does just what your asking it to, it records every key stroke made on a computer, some will do screen shots of what the screen looks like, you can get passwords, logins, e-mail, almost everything..... There are a lot of free one's on the web, but most of them are hard to use, go to a computer store and ask them about a key logger....

People of all ages need privacy. If you go off and read every little thing your child is saying to people online and every little website they visit, and then confront them about it they will definately rebel. I know this from experience... (I was on the child end) Talk to your children and gain trust. Befriend your children. Don't go the lazy way and try to control everything like a senseless dictator.

My mom used to do this and my dad and I look at her as a sneaky biatchh. Just trust your child. My mom did it just to try to catch us doing something wrong - she'sa real biatchh, and it sounds like you are too if oyu want to do that. You should be able to trust your child, tell him/her about how to stay safe online, and make sure they'll come to you if they ever have any problems regarding someone asking them personal info etc.
