I don't believe they are "wrong", unless the image is vulgar, or they draw undue and excessive attention to yourself, especially to parts of your body that should be private, then there is a modesty issue.
My opinion, however, is that they generally are tacky and they generally are worn by those who are not among the most dignified and respectable people. Therefore, there is an association in some peoples mind that all people who wear tattoos are part of a stereotypical type of undesirable group.
This prejudice may not be fair, but it is still there.
The choice, however, is yours. Just remember, they don't come off (that is painlessly and without expense). Many people have regretted getting tattoos as they have gotten older!
If you are personally thinking of getting one, I would advise against it, if for no other reason than out of respect for your mother.
**** EDIT
When I said that I did not believe anything was "wrong" with it, I did not know of Leviticus 19:28.
Under the Law of Moses, it was evidently forbidden. One could argue that this was the Law of Moses given to the Israelites, and since we are now under the New Testament, and this command was not repeated under the New Testament, then it does not apply to those living today, and those who are not Israelites.
On the other hand, one could argue that God does not change, so if this displeased Him then, it would be safest to assume that He would not be pleased with it now either.
At the very least, this requires more study and the "safest course" would be to not get any tattoos.
Also, by getting a tattoo, you may damage the good influence you may have with others!
Thank you to the others who answered and pointed out the verse in Leviticus!

It is condemned in the Old Testament as part of a particular pagan cultural practice. The scripture does not, however, condemn the idea of a tatoo on it's own. Whether or not a tatoo is good or bad all depends on what it depicts, and what the purpose of the tatoo is.

I know a young Christian brother that has a tatoo parlor in Chicago. He absolutely Loves the LORD.
Yes the Bible does say we should not be piercing the body(& we shouldn't but we do ) The Word says it is the Temple of GOD .
The beautiful thing is our awesome GOD can & does use anything & everything ,movies, tatoos, piercings ,songs ,whatever,
HE uses it all for HIS perfect purpose. As the WORD says our ways are not HIS ways.
This young man I mentioned has helped I don't have a clue how many (but I know it is a large number )of people to CHRIST.
They come into his shop & ask questions about GOD because they know he is a believer & they trust him. GOD uses this wonderful young man with his many tatoos to minister to people.
It is not good for you the ink all of it can be dangerous, the ink's can be poisionus for you . but it is your decision,HE still Loves you , I pray you really think about it. read the book of .Levitcus
Hope this helps.GOD Bless you.

I don't think it says anything specifically about tatoos or not in the bible, (it does say something about your body being a holy temple housing the spirit gifted you by God) but most people, in my experience, believe the following:
“Tattoos connote, in my opinion a lack of judgment, lack of forethought, lack of being able to see into the future and understand consequences.” -Dr. Taylor
I think some are very artistic and well done, but I'm not a fan of all of them.

In Leviticus it says not to do that and body piercing but I have one just because of a little rebellion when I turned 18 and could but I like them as long as its not nasty stuff. I have a mushroom and butterfly I hope I get the mushroom taken off one day I don't like it anymore. I still like my butterfly though.
I think if you put marks on your body it should be in good taste.

The Bible says not to deface your body. I am not sure where.
I have my ears pierced twice, though.
I don't know if that counts.
Our preacher had several tattoos from when he was in the navy. I see nothing wrong with it.
Now, I don't think it's attractive to be totally covered with them.

I have several. I'm no Christian, but I do have a strong faith and personal relationship with GOD. As I understand it, the Christian writings consider the body a temple, so permanently staining it is defiling one's temple.

Lev 19:28 You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I [am] the LORD.
God owns our bodies.
1Cr 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit [who is] in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
We have no right to hurt it at all.

Somewhere it says not to mark the body but it was a cultural reference for the times. God isn't going to make you burn because you like body art.

Well, some would quote the no "en-graven images" part but I personally don't have an opinion one way or the other. But then I have tattoos.
