Some try their best to make me apologize, but I refuse to do it. I am polite and considerate of others concerns, and I don't just light up anywhere because I feel like it--I go outside and away from buildings. It's my business, not theirs. I know it's not good for me, so I am making an informed choice. They can go bungee jumping without the cord for all I care.
(We have some neighbors kitty-corner from our house at the back, and when I smoke in the back yard, they make a huge stink and yell about it if they can even smell it. Right now we are having triple-digit heat, and all their windows are open, and I have to admit that the temptation to smoke in the back yard is very strong, especially when the breeze is blowing their way...)

I agree with Mindy. I'm a non smoker and never expect a smoker to apologise, but what is really annoying is inconsiderate smokers impose their 2nd hand smoke on the rest of the world as if we have no right to object and then act like you're being really unreasonable if you ask them not to blow smoke in your face.

Why should you need to apologise for smoking... its a personal choice, like drinking, eating, having sex.., lol!! Yeah like most things its a bad habit, but its your habit and you shouldnt be told what to do about it. Just for yourself be conscious about others around you, but dont apologise. I was a smoker and i stopped over 10 yrs ago. But i'm not one of those ex-smokers that condemn smokers... i find that hypercritical. I do feel for smokers though... life must be such a bummer.

Ian an ex-smoker and I am careful to accept a smoker as they are even though the smell is now wholly offencive to me.
My fathers family all died of cancer which is the reason why I stopped ( I know their is no guarantee but I did not wish to shorten the odds against myself that way)
The augment against smoking in public enclosed places is that whilst you make an informed choice to smoke those who breath in your tobacco smoke are not making an informed choice, in fact they are not making any choice at all,. it is not for you to tell them that you consider the risk small, they just do not want to take it. Bye the way it has always been a matter of courtesy to ask permission to smoke when in company. Oh I do not take drugs

If you have good manners it would seem natural to apologise if you caused distress to a non smoker. What is wrong with that ?

no i want to thank all smokers for paying way over the top for a pack of cigerettes. So that keeps the taxes down on other products.

Nah... I found a pin back in the 80s and I still wear it sometimes when I go to public functions... it reads:
Thank You For Not Breathing While I Smoke!

Some ppl do. What really gets me is that most of the ppl that do it to me smoke weed but not cigarettes and thats just as bad on your lungs if not worse; according to a study I read about today that said smoking one joint is as harsh on your lungs as 2.5-5 cigarettes
