Every so often, maybe three times a day for the past week, I notice my heart doing something strange, almost like it's skipping or slurring a beat. Before this week I hadn't noticed it. Is this a health issue, or am I just not getting enough sleep?

I haven't started any new medication, nor do I take any medication. I also don't smoke or have any history of heart disease. I'm 27 and in good health.

These may be palpitations. They may be described as fluttering, skipping, jumping, or flipflopping.

This is a short article about palpitations:

This article addresses palpitations as well: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003081.htm

Palpitations may be symptoms of cardiac problems. More often, they are harmless but alarming.

As you mentioned yours are occuring about three times a day, you may want to be evaluated by a physician to rule out cardiac problems. He/she will take your vital signs, listen to your heart, ask questions, and possibly do a short EKG and bloodwork (he/she will be looking for electrolyte imbalances). Based on the results, you may be referred to a cardiologist for some of the following tests: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/labs/7east/cardtests.htm

This may not be a health issue. But only your physician can reassure you about that!

Actually, it is normal for the heart to skip a beat every once in a while. Most people don't even notice it. It shouldn't be a health issue for you unless you are symptomatic - fainting, dropping your blood pressure- just look at it as being interesting.

People that can notice it will say that stress or being very tired make them more aware of it.

the heart missing a beat every now and again is normal, however, the fact that u r aware of your heart beating may be significant.you may have an over active thyroid gland, this is how mine was diognised so its certainly worth a trip to your GP for a check up.

You might have an arithymia which is when your heart might stray from a normal beat. However, it's common for people to experience these up to 100 a day. They are called PVC's. I used to have Ventricular Tachycardia...might want to go get it checked out.

You need to see a doctor very soon. You can have heart disease at any age, although it is more common with older people, especially out of shape, poor diets, and stress.

It could be either one.

Start by checking your nutrition: Are you getting enough? What about enough water?

Now- the skipped heartbeats might be nothing at all. But if it's just started, it wouldn't hurt to get it checked.

Good luck.
