avoid all the foods that were on recall lists for contaminated product over the past several mos.
The food was contaminated because hundreds of brands got tainted third world product including many many of the "premium" brands.
Avoid BHA/BHT which are toxic preservatives
Avoid "meat meal" without identification of the meat source.
Here are some good brands:
Canidae, Orijen, Wellness, Newman's Own Organics, The Honest Kitchen (raw freeze dried product), Merrick, Solid Gold.
Median priced that was not on recall list:
Nature's Recipe- has varieties for dogs sensitive to chicken and beef in dog food. No wheat, corn or soy is added.
They don't use rice protein concentrate and there are no artificial colors or dyes in the food.
Avoid foods that are gravy like, saucy such as Alpo as they are hard on the dogs system and Alpo was a majorly recalled brand, full of junk too.
Check with your Vet for the protein content your dog should have.
Natures Recipe has Linoleic Acid, over 3 percent. Less than 2 percent in a dog food is insufficient. This is important for skin and coat.
To any of the foods above you can sprinkle some Brewer's Yeast with Garlic (formulated for dogs) and add a bit of Norwegian Cod Liver Oil.
Give your dog some plain yogurt three times a week or sprinkle a bit of acidophilus over the food. These are healthy supplements to a diet.
Check out a raw diet if you would consider that route because you would know exactly what goes into your dogs food and the quality, freshness of the food.

There is a red dye used in some dog foods that has been found to cause cancer in dogs.

I know for sure it is found in Beniful, and that food made my dog and my boyfriend's sister's dog sick, too.

Also avoid by-products in dog treats too. The quality of the "meat" they use in those is very low and full of chemicals. I only feed my dog natural treats.

Some of your question depends on the age and breed of the dog.

Generally, sugar is bad. Chicken, turkey, and rice are good. I've also heard from various sources that blueberries are good in dog food.

In addition to age and lifestyle specific foods, there are also breed specific foods.

look for a food that has meat listed as at least the first 2-3 ingredients.
Avoid foods that contain corn, wheat, soy, by products, un-named meat sources, beet pulp, chemical preservatives, dyes, artificial flavoring.

Corn, by-products, and a lot of grain are big ones.

Why not try canidae, wellness, innova, california natural, oreijan, or natural balance.
