I think it would be therapeutic for atheists to finally admit what scares them so much about the bible. I'll start.
When I was fourteen years old I was beaten and mugged by a group of drunken Bibles (you read that right). These Bibles beat me relentlessly until I could no longer perform simple logical operations. It took three years of therapy before I finally started to believe in evolution again. Whenever I walk through a dark alley, I still worry that a copy of the New Testament will jump out of the shadows and attack me.
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I was wondering why some other atheists are afraid of the bible.

What kind of Bibles were they? I bet they were New World Translations...King James Versions would never attack you while they were drunk...They only attack when they're sober...It's all those Thee's and Thou's that just get them irritated.
I really don't fear the Bible, but I was once abducted by a van full of the writings of Xaviera Hollander. Ummmm. That was a nice month.

Some people recovering from religion really do react like that, since the abuse heaped on them by religious parents can be fairly debilitating.
I, on the other hand, find the Bible an interesting, if boring, book.

They were some of those Gideon Bibles, weren't they. Drunken, good for nothing, low-lifes!
What scares me about the Bible is that it is filled with horror, violence, and cruelty, yet people still believe God loves them. Typical victim mentality.

Pssst! Why are you supposing that? The bible is just like any other historical document. The product of revisionist history. It makes no difference to me what others have faith in. I just follow the golden rule. So far, so good.

It wasn't what I didn't understand that made me afraid of the bible... it was what I did understand...
Plus... it just seems so fictional... but I must admit it is a good read...
Added: You are right... I didn't read the details... sorry I guess I was in protection mode!

I treat the Bible with the same deference I treat Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It's not out of fear, it's out of recognition of a fairy tale when I see it.

I am not afraid of the bible, only how people use the bible to influence hate towards others.
The bible is a nice fictional book though.

I don't think anyone is afraid of a book. I wonder what it would look like if we burned it. If we could see the demons coming out of it! w00t! something to do later! yay
