When I get emails from young-earth creationists, evangelicals, etc..I (almost) always respond.

What signs should I look for to know that it is not even worth my time?

Well, young earth creationists are a guaranteed lost cause. There are also those who agree with you on something and yet still argue about it as if you don't. Then the people who don't actually respond to your argument, but keep regurgitating the same spiel they have been taught over and over - those people are lost causes.

These are just a few examples.

I will gladly answer questions, but when it becomes clear that the e-mailer is not reading what I write (or links I send) I end the conversation. There is no point in talking to someone who isn't actually interested in learning. Sadly, I think most just want to fight.

I personally don't think that having to explain yourself constantly is worth your time. You can try to get ppl to understand, but they most likely never will. Ppl who constantly degrade you for who you are and they don't even know you aren't worth your time.

When they say they actually hear the voice of God, that God speaks to them audibly. That, and when they decide to tell me their whole life's story, describing in detail their "salvation", then insist that I'm a miserable, hateful shlub for daring to challenge their faith.

That's when I know they're too far gone.
