That varies widely from dog to dog, but very few stand regularly at 8 weeks (2 months). My
GSD's puppy's ears both stood at about 15 weeks (almost 4 months) and stayed up after that. I believe most of his littermates' ears were up before that but I do not know if they stayed up or flopped before deciding to stand as the pups grew. First one went up, then the next day the other one went up. Some puppies ears don't stand that early. Others will go up and then flop down again as they grow and teeth. If one ear is standing, you really shouldn't worry too much about whether they will stand or not because chances are very good that they both will in the end. At any rate, your puppy is too young to start worrying about taping the ears yet.

You're puppy is completely normal and I wouldn't recommend taping the ears at this age. I raise and breed shepherds and the ear standing varies by dog. Some dogs just have more ear. You know that radar ear look. It's cute, but they're heavy and it takes the dog longer to have the ears stand up. Also it's completely normal for a shepherds ears to go up and down especially during teething. So I wouldn't worry about your pup yet, relax and enjoy how cute that puppy look is. At least let the puppy get through with teething though before you worry and that should be completely over by 6 months.

I have had some puppies that are 8 - 10 months before their ears stand. I have a female now that was more towards the 10 month mark, and she has placed in several shows now. Her personality is so sweet, she is so full of energy and seems so happy about life in general (it's hard for her not to do the body wag so I assume she's happy), I think I would have changed the way she is now if I had put her through the taping process.

Some German shepherds' ears never go up fully by themselves, but remain kind of splayed to the sides, or crooked.

Many ears go flop because the skin over the skull is too loose and the ears don't grow upright that way. It is a common problem in dogs that are supposed to have upright ears.

To help this along, you can tape the ears together (It doesn't hurt, you folks! It's like bandaging them!)-- 2 months old could be the right time to begin-- you should ask a vet or a GSD breeder what to do.

I think upright ears are best whenever possible because it improves drainage and reduces risk of ear infection, but there's nothing wrong with your pup for having floppy ears.

Well i have 2 German shepherds 1 is 8 weeks old and his ears were up at 2 weeks but his sister (3 years old) ears stand up occasionally like when something startles her. So he probably has to grow into them or maybe they will only stand sometimes like my 3 year old German . Oh unlike what some1 else said your puppy doesn't have to be a mixed German for his ears to not stand up because mine are pure German and they stand occasionally stand here is a link of my puppy watch as sometimes his ears are down and sometimes their up

Our German Shepherd's ears were also slow to stand up. The one went up first and they were both up by six months. No need to worry and I wouldn't recommend taping or splinting the ears.

hi!...this will go one for quite a few more months yet. one day his ears will be up then the left will be up, and an hour or so later the right will be up and the left will be down.or they both will be sort of up but pointed so he looks like a cone head. this is attributed to teething. my GSD didn't get "full reception" lol until he was 9 months and even now at almost 2 his left ear will go up when he is alert but will splay to the side most of the time. it just adds to his character...it doesn't make him a mutt. enjoy your puppy...GSD's are wonderful dogs and you will be proud of how intelligent and loyal he is going to be towards you then the ears won't matter.

Missy is right they say it is usually five to six months on average if ears haven't been hurt. If they've been hurt maybe never. Seen some that only time their ears didn't flop was when they were really interested in something.
