First of all which home theater surround sound amplifier are you using? There are differences between name brands.

Some of the lesser expensive surround sound systems have limited adjustments.

Most of the higher quality amplifiers have level settings that allow you to adjust the individual speaker channels. Find your owners manual and look for the set up information. This should lead you to the settings of the speaker levels.

If you cant find the manual you can look up the manufacturers website and submit a request for information. Be sure to have your model number and serial number when you call or submit a web request for information.

Are you using a surround sound system? If so, most dialog comes from the center channel speaker. Go into your setup and increase the volume of the center channel. If it is already at maximum then lower the volume of the other speakers. You will then be able to hear the people speaking.

Yes there is something you can do to make your surround sound better, you need to balance and level all of your speakers.
Go to Radio Shack and buy a sound level meter.
Then you need to level your speakers , usually found in the audio set up.
What you are basically trying to do is to adjust the level of all your speakers so that they are all playing at the same level.

Most surround sound systems have a function for reducing the dynamic range of the sound (the difference between soft and loud). They have different names, it might be something like "night mode" or it could be something else. But if you are using a Dolby Digital or DSS soundtrack, you should have this function. It is specifically intended to address your problem.
