Caravans are getting bigger as are the cars that tow them. This now means that a caravan and it's towing vehicle can be as long as an articulated lorry. However, there is currently no tax on drivers towing caravans. Why not? They block up the UK's roads from Easter until September, the driver in the vehicle towing the caravan has not sat a test to ensure that they know how to tow correctly and especially REVERSE! Towing a caravan puts an extra load on the towing vehicle which must increase it's carbon emmisions.

Caravans do we really need them??

No I don't work for Top Gear and bicycles take up a lot less room on a Uk road than a caravan. Besides when was the last time you noticed a caravan on a cycle path

Tought that would get a response. Ok good answers from both sides of the argument but it still raises a couple of points. Articulated lorries have to pay tax but the trailers they tow are not motorised. And would you caravaners have offered drinks etc if you hadn't been stuck on the motorway. I stand coreected on the subject of towing lessons although it is still obvious that some drivers need them. This is a debate that could go on and on so I'm going to leave it at that.

Once again someone having a pop at caravans. Somehow we're being blamed for all congestion and there seems to be a concerted effort to either get us banned off the road or have us pay more tax, we're being painted as pariahs. Well consider this, during the recent flood when the M5 in Worcestershire became impassable and motorists were stranded, who came out with the tea and other hot drinks, who shared their food with other drivers? I'll tell you, caravaners. These are the sort of people were talking about, good honest citizens who care about others. Leave off the caravaners, you might just be grateful to them one day.

I live close to the coast and it is true this time of year there are quite a few caravans, but there are even more cars and coaches too. Caravans are not taxed because they are towed, not self propelled!
I do not get p***ed off at the caravaners, they are entitled to go where they like, and they are reducing their footprints by not flying off abroad in a jet.
Face it the fact people go on about caravans if just because you can't see past them and they usually stay just under the speed limit, therefore annoying regular car drivers who want the road to themselves!

Campervans - yes. They are just heavy vans. Towed Caravans - yes. Road tax pays for wear and tear on roads and caravns are extra weight damaging these roads. --------------- Road tax survey: how much money collected from road tax is spent on roads... Britain - 33% Canada - 99% Japan - 125%

for your information. Caravaners can takes tests, and learn to drive their caravans safetly. We join a caravan club and pay yearly for it, and go and refresh our driving skills and learn how to tow correctly. so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

They do. The fuel consumption is halved so they pay more in taxes on the petrol.
