I would say most kids get their first words by about 15 months and go from there, by 3 yrs old a lot of kids can speak well. Boys tend to be slower than girls and firstborns tend to speak earlier than others. There's a large spectrum of what's completely normal and kids learn to speak in all different ways. Some have big vocabularies before they ever put two words together and others hardly speak at all and start right out with sentences. Soem have trouble being understood and others speak very clearly. Kids who are being exposed to more than one language are at a great advantage in that they can easily learn both languages with no problems at all, except they may take just slightly longer to start talking. Most kids understand a lot before they can speak at all.

My daughter is 2.5yrs.

She has spoken clear 3/4 word sentances from just over 18months old.

She can now hold an adult conversation (within limits) only making small mistakes when excited or angry with 6/7 word sentances.

My doctor, her nursary teachers and the health visitor all say this is unusual. She has stories read to her and I get her to repeat words she uses incorrectly.

I.e She'll say "look mummy that doggy is running on wall"

So I'll repeat "yes, that doggy is running on THE wall" and then she'll copy me saying it correctly.

Doctors say she's not advanced just a good learner. I read lots to her and we make up stories together at random.

Shes good with numbers too, can read and recognise numbers upto about 40's now. Knows her alphabet, and I actually taught her to read it forwards then backwards as a laugh and she can do it! lol!

Most kids are over age 3 though before speaking is clear enough in sentances for adults other than those constantly around the kid to understand.

As you can see from my spelling Im not too bright so obviously its not from me!
lol!

The rules to follow are first words at one, two word phrases by two, and three word phrases by three.

Intelligiblity by a stranger (eg not mom) is 50% at 2, 75% at 3, and 100% at age 4.

There is a huge spectrum of all development. If you have a question about your child, know that most states provide freee speech and language therapy for children.

All children are very different , my son started to say the odd few words when he was 1 buy the time he was 1and a half he was able to have a conversation with you , but my friends son is now 23 months and isn't saying anything yet but started to walk before he was 1 , thay say boys are lazy and girls are quicker but it all depends on the child.

My son started talking semi understandably in 2-3 word phrases about 18 months, but my neice will repeat anything you say and shes 13 months. Babies are different. If yours isn't speaking I wouldn't worry till the baby gets around 2.

They usually start "baby talk" between 6-10 months of age. When they start speaking in sentences or clear enough for you to understand it's usually around 2 yrs. old.

I think that they normally say their first words when they are a little over half a year.. it is usually just momma and dadda.. stuff like that.. they should be talking a little bit more by the time they are one and should be talking in full sentences bya bout two or a little before.. those full sentences are really hard to understand.. i think that thye normally start talking clearly by around 3.. thats what i have seen

my son started the mama dada stuff around 11 months. He just turned 3 and is finally speaking in sentances.

My older girl didn't speak at all till she was nearly 3 and then she spoke in whole sentances and we haven't been able to get her to shut up since- lol!

All kids are different!
