Well, to start things off, she did the video for just like a prayer, and used a black guy to depict Christ, and that Christ came alive from the cross, and the fact that she did some relatively naughty things with said black man during the video.
Then there was the fact that she portrayed masturbation in her stage show, along with depicting the crucifixion with her on the cross. I think the church saw all of that as acts of blasphemy.

Was she? You have to be a member of a religion to get excommunicated, I did not know she was. If that is true, I would probably guess, that among other things, the whole cross thing that she used in her stage shows (I think she was on a cross) would be a deciding factor. Not to mention everything else she stands for, or rather does not stand for.

I know some of the cultists called for her to be excommunicated for staging a crucifixion during her show in Rome.

Maybe Madonna was mad at her mother for leaving her so young, so maybe she "got even" by leading a life that got her excommunicated latae sentenciae.
