That is largely a matter of preference. You could get into the higher end brands like Colt and Bushmaster, both of whom have excellent reputations for quality and accuracy. However, a Colt AR will set you back about $1100-$1800+ on average, depending on what type you get. Since the lift of the assault weapons ban, AR's have seen a new resurgence with prices dropping and more features being added.

My advice to you is to first think about what you want it for. Do you want to do competitive target shooting, are you going hunting, or do you just want it to go bang everytime you pull the trigger? I have seen lightly used AR15 go for as little as $450 and new for as little as $650. These were generally your lesser known types such as Olympic Arms and Stag Arms. Both make good enough rifles and with many parts to AR15's readily available, repairs as well as upgrades are easily within reach.

Most standard AR's like Rock River Arms, or RRA, and the entry level Bushmasters will run you anywhere from $750+ new. I have not really heard anything overly negative about any one brand of rifle, though people voice opinions either way for every kind. Usually people just voice their preference for one kind over another.

All in all, I'd say look at what you want it for and decide on what your budget can handle. Also go to things like Gun Shows and look for deals as well as gun auction sites like Gunbroker.com or Gunsamerica.com and see what people are offering. In some instances such as gun shows, you can bargain and trade to lower the price.

Hope this helps!

I have several early model ColtAR-15's and they are well made. I also have a current Colt A-2 Heavy Barrel Target version that I also like. On the other hand I have (2) Bushmaster AR-15 clones in Heavy barrel target models that I shoot regularly in competetion and I love them! The Bushmaster is a very accurate rifle , quality components and hand fitted.. They just seem to out shoot the Colt H-Bar. Bushmaster builds only AR's and so their quality control and attention to detail is second to none..Even Colt with their reputation. There are at least a few dozen gun manufactures that produce AR-15 clones, but for my business and personal use I'm sold on the Bushmaster over Colt each and every time! I average about a 1,000 rounds per month out of these Bushmasters and have yet to get a jamb , stove-pipe or malfunction of any kind.......In my store I sell about 6-1. Six Bushmasters to every one Colt sold!

Well technically there is only one AR-15 and it is made by Colt. AR-15 is a name brand name like Coca-Cola. But I know what you mean, I would buy a Bushmaster. There are a lot of different configurations that are already factory made, so you have a little bit more variety of rifles without having to search all over for specific modifications. And Bushmaster makes a great rifle, I have an XM-15E3 and have never had a problem with it.

There is no pat answer to that. They are made by some excellent companies like colt, dpms, etc and some crummy companies too ( like Hess for example) Or, you can buy them in kits to put together yourself. The lower receiver has to be purchased thru a dealer, but all the other parts can be bought direct. I find the best price on a quality made lower, usually around $100.00 and then buy a complete kit for around $450.00 to build it myself. I build them for my personal use in either the competition format mostly. A fair price for a good AR15 is between $750 on up to $1500 or so depending on what you want it to do.

Get the Bushmaster, if you want a shorter version then get the dissapator model. It has a shorter barrel with full length sights, many people that own Bushmasters say that the accuracy is great and they haven't had any problems

An AR-15 (Armalite Co. Model 15) is not an "assault rifle". Its a semi-automatic rifle.
