I think God gives us ideas of things that are good qualities to have in a spouse, but the choice is up to us. I do believe there is a person that God would LIKE to see us with because he can us the two people's talents and spiritual gifts together to have a ministry together or to help develop his kingdom on earth. However, the choice is always up to us.

I guess you could say that. There's people I know that possess traits that I would or wouldn't look for in a spouse, and often God kind of points that out to me, but yes, it's ultimately up to us to decide.

Absolutely. Throughout the examples of the Bible, God is giving us advice on how we should live our lives.
He describes how men ought to behave, and offers countless examples to men of faith, courage, and love. He does the same for women, and even has passages in Proverbs 31 about the role of "Wife".
And, the Song Of Solomon is an entire chapter of the Bible that is a basic "How To" book of Covenant Marriage Love.
Modern people who fail to understand the full concepts of the Bible as it concerns marriage will often say that marriage is obsolete because it calls for women to submit to their husbands. Yes, those words are used, but there are more words in that topic that they forget about.
There are instructions there for they guys, too......
When I counsel folks, I put it in more modern terms. For the ladies, I remind them that God specified that the male has the title and obligations of "Head of the Household". This means that ladies, please let your man LEAD. He has the responsibility of making final decisions.
Ladies have every right and responsibility to give their husbands all the information they need to make those decisions, including their opinions. But, when the decision is made, they also have the obligation to follow the direction given by their husband, unless it goes against the word of God. Should the decision prove to be incorrect, you should support your husband, and encourage him. Offer your help to get on a better track.
Gentlemen are obligated to agonize over every decision. They must make decisions that are Godly in nature, and for the best interests of their wives, children and family first. Even if the decision inconveniences the man, he is responsible for the welfare of his family.
He is also obligated to Love his Wife the same way Jesus loves us. Jesus was willing to die for us, and similarly, a husband must be willing to lay down his very life for his wife.
The Bible instructs us to Submit to one another in Love.
So, yes, God gives us much advice on what would constitute a good lifemate. It is up to us to understand and heed that advice.
