to the last 3 ....there was NO connection with Hussein and terrorists which was one of the FALSE causus belli of this war for profit of which you are its apparently duped victims!!!
If we attacked every country with madrassas and such we would be at war with the whole mideast oh wait we are getting there and people like you who think there is a solution to terrorism that is primarily authoritarian and military in nature then you have not paid any attention history at all....the military response only FEEDS the insurgent/terrorist/jihadist whatever....thus your answers are part of the problem not the solution

Al Qaeda terrorists were in Iraq prior to Mar 2003.

Saddam Hussein was in Iraq prior ro Mar 2003.

Iraqis were unable to fix their problems then and seem unable now even after enormous assistance from the international community.

An international provisional authority should govern Iraq until such time that they are more able themselves.

I didn't think the concept of benchmarks was that difficult. Things are not going to be pleasant for them as long as Saudis et. al. are blowing people up. US troops can suppress some of that activity, but only if they're there. If the US are leaving, which we'll do eventually, then the Iraqis are going to have to do the job themselves.

Since when were there any lack of terrorists in any country? I'm sure there were pleny in Iraq before we invaded. I think they're a country unsure of what's right, with no stamina left to fight a war they did not have the ability to handle by themselves. I think they've been stepped on waaaay too much in the past. President Bush did what he thought was right, but a lot of things have happened he did not intend. :(

I'm going to introduce you to a word in Arabic. It's important that you understand it because many of the web sites and U.S. media sources don't ever mention it. The word is "Hijra". It means voluntary expatriation to carry out Jihad. One hundred thousand were trained in the Jihadi Madrassas (tTerrorist training schools) in Afghanistan and Pakistan. After completing training they were to perform Hijra. That meant moving to some other country to carry out Jihad. While they were waiting to carry out some suicide mission they gathered in small groups in a "Beyit Al Shuhada" (Martyr's House). Al Anbar Province is full of them and was so before our military operation began on March 19, 2003. Daliyah Province, bordering on Iran, is also the site of many "Beyit Al Shuhada".
Quite paying attention to reports in the U.S. media. None of them know any Arabic or anything about the roots of the Salafist Jihadist movement. Most can't even read a map or even pronounce the words I set down in this answer. Most of all, don't pay attention to the blogs whose sole purpose is to manifest their hatred of President Bush and their disdain for our military. If most of them ever came face to face with a Jihadist they would need a change of underwear.

There were terrorists in Iraq before the war: Saddam Hussein and his two sons. The US cleaned them out.

Haha, who said there were no terrorists in Iraq BEFORE the war. The media? Why, because it wasn't on TV everyday, it didn't exist? That's like saying by closing your eyes, it'll go away.

There have been terrorists for thousands of years -- we just used to call them different names -- bandits, brigands,
barbarians, huns, pirates, criminals, etc.

And Iraq has nothing to do with the terrorists who attacked us -- nor will our efforts in Iraq have any effect on stopping the terrorists in the rest of the world -- Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Libya, England, Spain, Singapore, Malaysia and the US.

Because the Jihadists are using Iraq as their battleground. The majority of our problems come from outside of Iraq by personnel or funding. If we don't continue to fight them there then we will have to fight them elsewhere.

You should consider acquiring your information from other sources than AlterNet, Kos, The Democratic Underground and the rest of the fever swamp. This question is so misinformed as to be alarming.
