You definitely will save money doing them yourself!! I just did my best friends wedding programs (I did my own too!)
I used Microsoft Publisher and found free templates online. But you could also use MS word or powerpoint whatever you have. Then I went to Office Depot, I bought the cardstock for the outside and I printed the inside on regular paper and tied them together with a ribbon it looked so professional and for about 100 I spent $45 (that is including the paper!!). Keep in mind you only need to plan 1 program per family or per couple.

We printed ours at home and used watercolor paper as it was thick and textured, with blue ink. They ended up looking really cool and I don't think anyone realised they were home-made.
For the cost of the cardstock and ink, it will still likely be much cheaper than having them professionally made, and it is one of those things that people will hardly notice at a wedding.
If you are looking for a way to save yourself a few hundred dollars, it's a great way of doing it and if you do them in lots of 30-50 over the space of a couple of weeks, you'll hardly even notice the time. Better still get someone to help! One of my bridesmaids was on folding duty, whilst I scored the folds and they only took a few hours.
Congratulations and good luck!

I would also say to do them yourself if you have a good printer. You want book fold programs in lavendar? What color ink? If you want white or metalic inks you need to know that the majority of home printers do not print in white or metalic colors you will need a commercial printer.
I would also suggest to contact Occasion Creations, I've worked with them in the past and they are very reasonable and do great work. The turn around time is also great. Just a suggestion.

You can make your own a lot cheaper than buying them, I think that is a great idea. You can print them out, punch two holes in the top, put brackets in them, and then tie a nice piece of ribbon together. You can also go and take a look at some nice ones at the store, and I'm sure you could get some easy ideas. Good luck!

I'm getting married in two weeks and I researched tons of companies. I'd print them myself. I went to Office Max, bought colored paper and printed them from home - NO ONE can tell!
Literally, even if you go buy a printer, you're still going to pay less. If you have a company do it, you're looking at at least a couple hundred dollars, plus shipping, etc. unless you go pick them up.
No one is going to know the difference, and you have to get to the point where you realize that no one is paying attention. In one year, everyone's going to say "remember how pretty she looked, or how in love they were" not "remember her professionally printed programs."
We tend to focus on these things as brides, since it is our big day, but when is the last time you went to a wedding and ACTUALLY spent more than 20 seconds looking at the program.
Good Luck and Congrats!!!

YOu will save a lot of money doing it yourself and probably have a lot of fun doing it too. It is not that hard, I'd say go for it. Lots of people do stuff themselves these days and why not. When you look at the finished product Im sure you will be very satisfied with yourself.

We made them ourselves and it only cost the amount of the paper...I typed out the program on Word, ran it through the heavy copier at the church (it was a perk they let us use) and folded them myself.

I went on my home computer and typed up what I wanted them to say. Then I went to Stapels and got light blue card stock, walked over to their copy machine and made copies on the card stock. Then took it all up front and paid for it. Cost me about 50 bucks.

Go to a craft store. They probably have the stock and even a computer program to help you do it.
Best of luck and congrats
