You can't be a non-profit without being certified I believe, or meeting federal criteria.

Many say they are not for profit, like hospitals, but they really are. My hospital makes millions, but all it has to show at the end of the tax season is a zero balance, while they give themselves pay raises and build unnecessary and duplicative services!

Better read the guidelines for non-profits!

Sure it's legal, starting a business is a right guaranteed by our government.

You just can't claim an exemption on your taxes, or advertise that you have an exemption.

I can start a web site accepting donations to buy the dude who sits on the sidewalk a shower, and accept money and give it to him without violating any laws. As long as I get a receipt that he received the money, no prob.

In order to have a legitimate Non-Profit organization, you must apply for a 501-C from the IRS.

To be a non-profit corporation you need to register. If you don't register you are not a non-profit corporation and cannot claim to be on your web site.

Do it right and get registered.
