If he was arrested, then it's going to show up on his driving record, I assume. So the insurance company will know about it before too long anyway.

Your company will find out at renewal time (probably 60 days prior) when they run motor vehicle reports. Your son's license will be suspended after he goes to court unless the ticket gets reduced. Most companies will nonrenew your policy due to this arrest. If you have Progressive they won't nonrenew, they will just raise your rates. Also, tickets are not added to policies mid-term, only at renewal time. If you have some time before your renewal, you may want to consider buying an older car that you can pay cash for that only needs liability & put it in your son's name & have him buy his own coverage & then take him off of your policy. I would suggest Progressive (especially if your son has been on your policy at least 6 months) since they would probably have the best rates for your son in his situation. This way, your company may not find out about the incident - it is still possible they will but if he is taken off before they pull records, you may be OK. I would keep the policy in force even if his license gets suspended & still make him pay for it. He will be paying for this for a long time to come - I don't know where you are but in some states, underage drinking ticket is a license suspension until 21 yrs old.
I am hoping he learned his lesson for this & has to do some restitution & has to go to one of those "CRASH" classes. E

You will not need to. The insurance company will get the information from the State DMV. This wll probably cause a rate increase on your insurance premium.

thye will find out shortly anyway, they always check the driving history of their clients to make sure things like that are found out.
Question is, why is your 17 year old still on your insurance if he pulls a stunt like that. If it was one of my kids, I'd yank his driving priviledges and drop him from my insurance instantly for being that foolish ( that's a nice way of saying stupid) Yes it's gon araise you insurance rates. Make him get his own insurance from this point on. Also, if he is driving one of your vehicles, park it. Make him get his own to do such dumb stunts in. He will learn quickly not to do it again.

They'll find out no matter what! They make it their business to find out! I once got a mild increase in my insurance when someone rearended ME! (I had to contest it....they'll do anything for more money.) Besides, in most states, since it's illegal for a person under twenty one to consume alcohol anyway, I am surprised there aren't any further charges. Best wishes....and please tell your son to drive carefully in the future, for his sake and for others! Hopefully his lesson is learned! :-)

Was he listed under you insurance policy or was he just driving your car/his car..........
Whether you notify the insurance company or not, the arrest will still be on his driving record, and it will show on his insurance or your (which ever one he has) sooner or later.

Might as well. They will know when they run his driving record at renewal time anyway. And that is what you promised to do when you signed up for the policy, to "notify them of any changes...."

yes, if you would like your rates to go up . i would get the kid an attorney and keep his record clean and your rates low.
just because he was arrested doesn't mean he is convicted yet. why pay an increase if you don't have to.
