She's 8 months old, I feed her on Eukanuba puppy biscuits, mixed with chicken and she has 2 treats per day, one of which is a pedigree dentastick. She keeps getting constipated and Im not sure why, Ive tried worming tablets but it still happens. I know charcoal biscuits stop wind, is there something like this to stop the constipation?

Dogs can get constipated from not drinking enough water. However, it could also be her food. I don't know the specifics of the Eukanuba you're feeding your puppy, but all of the Eukanuba products in general are very low quality. They have way, way too much grain, including sorghum, beet pulp and corn which dogs can't digest and have been proven to be the cause of several allergies. I think the best thing you can do stop your puppy's constipation is change her food to a better brand (gradual change) - try Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold, or Wellness.

You also shouldn't be worming a dog over and over again not even knowing if she has worms - it's hard on her system and over-the-counter dewormers don't work anyway - you need to get them from your vet.

Constipation is a symptom of an underlying problem. As your dog "keeps getting constipated" I would start with a vet to find out what the problem is and treat that! My guess is the dentastick is binding to her. But that is only a guess, I am not a vet. Worming tablets is not for constipation. OTC wormers can be harmful to pets, some have died from them. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. "Vet approved" means they have a vet on staff to approve their product. In other words, someone paid to approve it. Same with foods most vets recommend. Salesmen "gift" vets then the vet recommends the food. Most vets are not nutritionists! Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. How constipated exactly? Does she just not go for days or do you see her straining to poo?

Worms do not cause constipation. It could be dietary, but you are feeding a very decent diet, high quality food. I suppose you could try moving to wet food only - this can be perfectly acceptable if you continue to use dry products only.

Truthfully, I would consult a vet. There are disorders which can cause constipation, and since constipation can cause problems over time - better safe than sorry. Plus the vet can give you something suitable to aid constipation - but if this doesn't work they may suggest further investigation.

Try giving him a table spoon of unsweetened, unflavoured yogurt with an active probiotic culture. It's good for him and will help repopulate his digestive flora. Whatever your vet says DO NOT PUT HIM ON HILL'S. It's basically feeding him flour and flavouring. Easy on his tummy but little to no nutrients with very very little (if any) benefit to the constipation issue. It's better to have him on a dry food like Orijen or Blue Buffalo

Youre giving the puppy alot of very dense cereal based food.
I was going to suggest that you add some fat back into the diet with canned food. Do not add cooking oil or any oil into the diet that isnt expressly for dogs please. The canned food will create enough lubrication to help with that constipation.

You should get her vet checked 1st of all, encourage water intake even soak the biscuits, if this fails clear some lactulose or liquid paraffin should help move things along.

The Denta sticks have milk/lactose in them; this could be the problem. Soak her dried food in hot water from kettle so it swells up before she eats it, this should help, also give carrots as treats, good for the teeth and has more roughage to help with normal stools.

It's probably the food, not enough fiber to keep her regular.. You need to feed better quality dog food, cut back on all the treats.. More exercise and more water to drink.
