You are asking this in the US taxes section, so don't know if you are asking a canada tax question in the wrong section, or are asking a US tax question, and are just living in Canada. If it's a US tax question and are living in Canada, you can't collect the child tax credit for yourself. There is a $1,000 child tax credit, and it's for kids under 17, but it has to be claimed by the parent for their child(ren), not by you for yourself. If it's a canada tax question in the US section, then I can't help you. Sorry either way.

In the US a child tax credit is for someone supporting a child, if you are a child on your own, you cannot claim yourself as a child you are supporting. In Canada have no idea what the rules are, most likely similar.

If you're an American citizen, you can't. Once you live on your own, you are declared emancipated and no longer qualify for the child tax credit. Bummer. I have no idea about Canada though
