my dog is 15 and may be has a year left, but the bird is a question in my mind. There should have been a warning label, he is 12.

I really can't say much more it's been pretty well covered here
and if you think your dog is only going to live to see 16 yrs old you've got another thing coming , Unless you know for sure it is extremely sick, I've had different breeds of dogs, Some pure bred some Mixed bred, and i was told their average life span was " 10 yrs or so" they lived for 20 yrs before dying of old age I've got one now that is a Collie/husky/Chocolate lab mix that is 11 yrs old and still going strong, her Grandmother lived way past the 10 yrs i was told she'd live for
as long as the animal is taken care of correctly they can out live their owners no matter what kind of animal it is, or what statics say they live too. it all depends on how the animal is raised, and cared for

I feel sorry for that poor bird - why didn't one of your kids take it with them when they moved out? I'm sure they're the one(S) who fed it and took care of it while they lived at home, because it sure sounds like you have NO clue what to do with it!

Since you seem uncomfortable with the bird, i suggest you contact a bird rescue organization to take him off your hands. Otherwise both you and he are going to be very unhappy for a LONG time.
Cockatiels have been know to live 15 to 20 years and more in special cases.
Do a simple search on the computer for "Bird rescue" and include your state to locate a nearby rescue group.

Did you ever consider the fact that maybe you shouldn't have gotten a bird if you didn't want to make a commitment? Cockatiels are supposed to live that long, most of the time even longer. If you really don't want the bird, then PLEASE give it to someone who does, instead of just letting it wither away. And the bird is probably looking at you because it wants attention, something that pet birds happen to NEED.

Cockatiels have a life span of up to 30 years. If you really don't want the bird in your house any longer, contact a rescue or foster agency like Mickaboo and they can help you place your bird in a new home.

This is why people should do their research before taking home a new pet. If the bird is well cared for, you may have another 10 years with him. My cousin has one that's 19 years old.

Gee did anyone mislead you that any living thing eventually dies? Did someone tell you that YOU would live Forever? I would certainly hope not, because they would have mislead you then!!

If you had common sense a living plant will eventually die. Comparitivly speaking that even the life cycle of a bug, eventually comes to an end at one point in time. Nothing lives forever, so where did you ever get the impression that a bird, depending on it's diet that YOU FED it could live FOREVER????

Besides, where is the cockatiel, spelled C-O-C-K-A-T-I-E-L susposed to look, since you ARE the one that is to feed it and nurish it and give it attention? Or perhaps read through some more of the interesting questions here on yahoo and educate yourself a little bit more and just maybe your bird might live a little bit longer!!!

Good Luck!

So much has been learned in the last decade regarding birds and the role their diet plays, that it is possible that the information you were given early on may have been considered correct by industry standards twelve years ago.

Why are you looking for him to die ? Cockatiels are sweet birds. If you dont think you want him, please give him to someone who will love and care for him .
