I don't think that Henry VIII was a "ladies" man at all. He was King and required a male heir. The culture at that time did not look favourably on having a female monarch.
The disagreement with The Pope was political as well as doctrinal. However,Henry simply broke with Rome, He continued the doctrine of the Catholic Church. When He died, he left money for Masses to be said for the repose of his soul - not something a Protestant would have done. Protestantism only arrived when his son became Edward VI.

Not so much a ladies man but one who wanted a male heir.

Since his first wife could not produce one, he (being a church going king) wanted a divorce so he could marry someone else but the Catholic religion doesn't allow for that (and the Pope wouldn't allow for an exception) - so Henry created the Church of England with himself as the leader.
