Because it's too long and these people don't really like to think about stuff very much. Most christians just believe what they're told and go along with the rest of 'em. If they became masters of the bible they would find the glaring contradictions, mistakes and brutalities the book features. If people wanted to follow the word of god based on the bible (which is the only source any christian has) then we would have a responsibility to him to kill anyone who does not believe it god, to kill anyone who has stolen from anyone, to kill anyone who has committed adultery, to kill anyone who works on the sabbath. It all works out if you get to pick and choose and never question. Never, never question.

Probably because most of them realise that the OT and NT books consist of nice stories and many contradictory accounts - as well as some _very_ nasty suggestions on what to do to those who are not of the believing kind! So what is the point of expending one's brainpower on such a task, when things like scientific research is to be done, advances in medicine to be made, technological applications of science to be perfected, sick people to be cared for, families to be supported, etc.? To spend one's life trying to 'master the bible' would be a complete waste of one's time and could even lead to the Western/Christian world reverting to something approaching a Taleban society. And who would want that?!

As a Christian it always infuriates me when I meet Christians like that. I'll grant that the Bible is a big book. You could study it for years and still not know everything about it. But how can base your life on something you barely know? It's just stupid. Oh and I've read the Bible completely through twice. Also it's just as stupid when people who haven't read "The Origin of the Species" support Evolution and people who haven't read the Quran talk about how great Islam is.

We are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God. There is not many christians out there that will ever have the time to master the Bible. I guess my suggestion is if you want answers to your questions that are accurate maybe you should try and master the Bible and find your answers. We are human beings and even with the guidance of God we still don't have all the answers. For if we did , we wouldn't need God.

Maybe what you asked had no connection with the bible.
But also to be a christian you don't need to know the bible word by word.
Is not the word that has an importance is the facts...
I am a christian orthodox.
A priest once said that is good knowing the commandments but is better for people who respect them without even knowing about them...

A person can read the Bible every day all day for 100 years and STILL not "master" it.
What kinds of questions are you asking?

You are making the obvious mistake of confusing fundies - who are obsessed with the Bible, and can quote it chapter and verse - with mainstream Christians, who are encouraged to leave details up to qualified persons with degrees from divinity schools and concentrate on the basic thrust of the teachings. It is a question of the old metaphor regarding the forest and the trees. Most Christians are Catholic. You are confused since you assume most are fundies. As to " no clue" since most aren't crude literalists like fundies and atheists, probably most of your questions would strike me as foolish nonsense. Fundies really think the Bible says heaven is above the clouds, etc. Atheists think that's what it says too. They both read scripture like it was an auto manuel. So your questions wouldn't be worth answering,if that's what they're based on,crude literalism.

Because its easier to make it up as you go along.
But anyway, when some master the bible, and attempt to give their take on it, the response is usually something like, "that's a lot of crap".
In John 8, Jesus said, "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free". He was talking to "those Jews who believed Him." And what was their response? Not "give us the truth, we want to hear it" - they were incensed that He implied they had ever been "not free', in bondage.

Many churches do not have a comprehensive study of the scriptures. My church has a four year cycle where we will spend a year on the Old Testament and another on the New Testament.

Well, the first few questions on your asked list have nothing to do with the Bible...maybe that's why.
