Many people are trying to justify the many marriages for prophet Muhammed (11 wives + 2 concubines). Some said it was for political reasons, others said it was for humanity reasons ... the list goes on.

What surprises me is that through my reading in Islamic history I found out that ALL the companions of prophet Muhammed used to have more than one wife. Some examples are Abu Bakr (3 wives), Omar (9 wives), Ali (4 wives), Othman (3 wives)... etc.

What was the reason for all those marriages?

Muhammad said that men should marry as much as they can. There were lots of extra women around as the men were killed in the constant warfare.

I don't know anything about the Koran, but my guess is that hundreds even one hundred years ago, infant mortality was a problem. Maybe a woman would have 10 pregnancies and 2 would survive to be adults. So wealthy people could afford quite a few wives. I also wanted to add many women died in childbirth so starting out with 7 wives meant you may end up with 2 and 10 children that live to be adults.

although none of them would admit it and yes sex, men use one end of their body and the other end stops working because all the blood goes downhill.
Also if you look at the Roman Catholic Church, and the LDS Mormons, encouraging many children is a meal ticket for the religions who do this. More followers means more $$$. I know nothing about Islam, but a guess is they might also use that line of thinking. I think the Amish and Hutterites also think along those lines.

after reading these answers I feel what would really have been nice for the Multi-wives would be, people taking care of them without exacting sex from them. What would have been wrong with just protecting the vulnerable, just as a virtue and for no other reason??????

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

It was common amongst the peoples of Arabia to have more than one wife. Islam regulated the practice and limited the number of wives to four, except for Allah's Messenger, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him. He was allowed more in order to use his marriages as examples of things that were allowable or commendable, such as marrying widows and divorcees.

It is not commonly known that Muhammad, pbuh, did not marry for the first time until he was 25. He married his first wife, Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, and she was fifteen years older than he. They were married for twenty-five years. He did not marry any other women during her lifetime. Their love for each other was great and she was the first to believe in his mission as a prophet.

After the death of Khadijah, ra, Allah's Messenger married a woman of mature years, around 55 years old. The only maiden / virgin he married was Aisha, who was the daughter of his beloved friend, Abu Bakr. Other marriages were to take care of widowed women or to strengthen bonds of friendship and cooperation.

The actual moral reason they took more than one wife was to protect widows and provide security in raising their children. Many men lost their lives in wars and many women were not financially capable of raising the children. It was common to marry your brothers widow in those days and raise his children as your own. This was not for sexual reasons.

However, you will find many men that used this for sexual gratification instead, hence old men taking very young virgin brides.

Also, you could not take another wife, unless you could financially support her and her children.

Edited - the anology in the answer above mine in incorrect. The Mormon religion did not encourage people to have more children for monetary gains for the church, it was under a belief that Joseph Smith was told by God to go and multilpy the religion. They are very family committed.

Mohammed did change the Islam law of 4 wives for himself, so he could take more. But this was after his much older and wealthy wife died and he inherited her wealth. He was a very faithful young husband to a much older and wealthy wife who would of divorced him if he wasn't. It was after her death when he took on multiple wives and a six year old virgin bride as a man in his 50's.

During these times we were still populating the earth. There is enough now so the men can cut it out. actually after populating the earth the reasons for polygamy were for saving the orphans. but as usual, man has twisted the rule and used it for various sexual partners.
