I am writing a paper on diversity in public service (paramedicine, policing, fire) and military service. I am including a survey of whether you feel gays and lesbians should openly serve in our public safety sector and our military? And if you are a military professional or public safety professional, do you feel that it would undermine the oath you take to serve next to a gay or lesbian service member?

Second Question:
Do you feel affirmative action is necessary in public safety careers? It has been proven to make a more racially and ethnically diverse sector, how do you feel.

Thank you in advance for your input as this helps my paper along tremendously!

I don't care if they are gay or straight as long as they have the ability and willingness to save my a## (no pun intended) when it needs to be saved.When its my life on the line all that other crap goes right out the window.

I would rather know they are gay up front because it will allow me to set my boundaries with them from the begining. This way no one is violated nor disrespected. The oath I took was to serve and defend the constitution. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say anything about not defending those who are homosexual.

Affirmative action is necessary but needs to be pursued more vigorously at the higher ranks with all ethnic diversities.

Diversity=Division

Nothing is stated before I say "I am an American"

There are stories in my family of my Great Great Uncle throwing people out of his home for speaking Norwegian. He would tell them Norway stinks, I did not come here (1885) because it is such a great place. We speak English or we don't speak in my home.

Being gay in the military......Bad idea to introduce known causes of trouble amidst a bunch of young, well armed young men that will get drunk on occasion.

Affirmative Action=giving the job to the least qualified in far too many instances. It is just soft core discrimination.

I was once asked why we did not have a lot of minorities working for us as Field Techs. I was one of the guy's representing the Tech Staff during interviews.
The answer: "You can only hire those that apply"

Not tolerating ANY discrimination is my way of doing business.
