Only about the price of a pack of cigarettes. In some stores, a pack cost $6. In Manhattan, some charge $7. Put it this way a pack of cigarettes cost about 25 cents to produce. Then you have the transportation cost plus the TAX. Most who smoke go outside but complain most about the outrageous cost. Smokers are funding the NYC education system. Smoking and lottery.

At the time this was being debated early in 2002, there were tons of petitions arguing against the non-smoking policies in bars and restaurants. Personally, even as a non-smoker, I know alot of people who were upset that the government was trying to regulate personal liberties like smoking. Alot of restaurant and bar owners were worried that their revenue would decrease because people would go out less frequently if they couldn't smoke inside.
But, I am glad to say years later, I don't miss the smoke at all and I think most people agree it makes dining and drinking more pleasant, except in the bitter winters. Some bars have even taken care of that. There is one bar that rents a limo to park in front during really cold winter days and smokers can smoke in the limo.

No, being a smoker is like having the plague in NYC. Everybody is so tolerant of everything else here....except for smoking, you may as well have devils horn poking out of your forehead.

Some people protested, some people celebrated. Life goes on.

I think with so many people preferring not to smoke or even worse being allergic to it that there weren't many protests.
