Ok I love taking pictures and so I'm gonna start doing it on the side. I have a normal job working 3 days a week and hubby works too so not like we need money. However I thought if I put flyer up and make some cards then I'd put them around at gas stations party city and such places. But I need a solo to go by/ a cute name. And different package prices. I'll do birthday partys events or even just one on one photos. just how to get started?????

Please do not take offense at this, but the first question has to be, are you any good? Many people like to take pictures. You'll have to have better stuff than Uncle Bob with the new digital Rebel if you want to succeed, particularly at shooting stuff like birthday parties, which are not usually hired for professional coverage. Digital SLRs have opened the door to upstart photographers trying to start a business. (At least you didn't mention doing weddings!)

I would make up a business card and pass it around. Party City is a good idea, assuming they allow it, also you might advertise on Craigslist or in the local paper or the free paper that some communities publish. Do a few free or at cost shots of your friends and their children to make a portfolio. Mention to everyone you know that you do children's portraits, or family environmental portraits, or party coverage, or whatever. Tell all the folks at the gym, church, preschool, PTA meetings, etc etc. If you have an office, frame some nice shots for display. Ask the local restaurants or doctor offices if you can display some work. Put your cards out at daycare centers. Volunteer to shoot charity events, like Relay for Life, or Adopt a Pet outings. If you're talented and produce good work, word will get around. It may take a while to build up a client base.

Please don't advertise to shoot weddings until you mentor with an established pro to learn the ropes and are prepared with adequate equipment, knowledge and training.

Good luck to you in your venture!

You already answered your own question. You get the word out by any means necessary: fliers, signs, business cards passed out to everyone, telling all your friends. You'll need to have a book of your best photos to show prospective clients the quality of the work you do.

By "I need a solo" are you referring to a business name? Shots by Sondra. It really doesn't matter. Since you're just doing it for fun you don't need a formal business identity; using your real name is fine.

Good luck.
