I work in Philadelphia, PA and often see women walking around with full head-to-toe religious garb on. The only visible part of their body is their eyes. I think that they are all also African Americans, but I'm not 100% sure of this. I'm guessing they are Muslim, but can't be sure. Anyone know what religion they are and what the significance of the clothing is? Is it just the women who wear this, or men too? I think I've also seen the clothing to be black or brown - any significance to that? Thanks!

Most likely they are Muslim converts. There is no significance to the color. It is traditional to wear black, but it is not necessary. They are wearing these clothes because it is a part of their religion to do so. While modesty is required for men and women in Islam, the requirements for women are stricter as the pyschology of men makes them more easily aroused. So, you will generally not see Muslim men practicing modesty to the same degree as Muslim women do.

im pretty sure they are islamic...women are supposed to cover their whole bodies when they are out in public because if they dont it shows disrespect. the only time a woman can be uncovered is if it is with other women or with her husband. Men dont have to wear it because they are seen as superior to women. your guess about them being muslim was right because there are many muslim african americans. im not sure about the black and brown situation. You also see woman that just have their heads covered with a scarf with long sleeve shirts and pants. These people are probably more modern and less extreme.

Yes, I believe they're are Muslims since Muslim women are required to cover themselves, the color is not significant though, as some people already explained.
