From the age of 11 I wanted to be an accountant. I trained as an articled clerk for 5 years, qualified with a regional prize for my final and, I think, became a pretty good accountant - even, apparently for my proffesion, I had a "wicked" sense of humour.
I entered the big world of industry, was so successful that I was offered and took a high management position but was no longer mostly an accountant. High pay, lower satisfaction - until I had a heart attack attack at 47 years of age and took early retirement. Excellent invalidity pay and now pension but some doubts.
Should I have stuck to my chosen career with more satisfaction, albeit at a lower level of pay, (and possibily avoided the stress/heart attack) or did as I did.
Your views would be appreciated.

We all make choices in life, sometimes they are for the better, sometimes not,but these choices are what makes us the people we become. It is no point looking back and saying "What iff".My husband had a heart attack and subsequently had a quadruple bypass at 55.He has had to go back to the job he had before that he hates as he has no training for anything else,he is 59 now with another 6 years to go! (no pension in his job) He would wish he was in your position and could retire and enjoy time with me (he is away all week)So do'nt look back with regret, just be thankful that you can be secure enough to retire early and be with your family.

Are you regretting not having had the chance to practice? Or the heart attack?
YOu could put the first one right by taking on a little light accountancy at home - small businesses would love the chance to talk to a friendly guy that knows about accountancy who isn't going to charge them the earth.
If it's the heart attack - has it made you that unhealthy? Could you maybe take up a new interest like walking, sailing, chess, bowling, knitting (OK - the sky's the limit really!)
Thing is - there is no point worrying about what if I had - only in what can I do! (Ooh - yeurch - that sounds horribly like one of those "better yourself here" ads doesn't it?!?!? Sorry!)

It does not matter now, it's gone you can not get it back.
What now matters is what do you do for the rest of your life, in spite of your heart attack you could still have another 40 years or more to live. You must "not never no how" resort to " what might have been dreams " they are pointless. Can you guarantee you would not have had a heart attack? No!
What I am trying to say is; What do you want to do now? That is what counts.

If you could have survived and not be broke with the lower pay and be satisfied you should have stuck with it. However, i and many people can understand why you went with the higher promotion and pay.
But remember, no point dwelling on the past, think of the present as well as the future. At least you've learnt a lesson from this and it would be nice to pass it on to people you know so they don't make the same mistake/

Listen Crispy, stress is caused by the pressure of things we have no control over. One thing you have no control over anymore is the past. Stop mulling over it and focus on the future.
