Why do some missiles spiral in weird movements after they are launched initially. I have seen a few clips on tv and some don't seem to launch straight up at the beginning.

You're referring to the THAAD missile. They do that on purpose. It's used to burn off some fuel and excess energy.

I would guess the inital thrust is the strongest. The rear of the missile probably spirals due to the pounds per pressure. They are probably made to spiral like that, or the whole missle would just zip off out of control.

Not all have stabilizing fins -- and some deploy the fins after launch -- so without fins, the missile can spin or twist much more easily than it can with fins.

The military buys anything from anybody, as long as they can spend money on garbage. Generals usually love to spend money, its more exciting then actual war fare. There you have risks and get blamed for failure, when they spend money, its all happiness and glory.
