Damage to the eyes is the most common injury in sport fishing (something I learned watching ESPN). This can be from physical injury by hooks or cellular damage done by the effects of the sun which can cause retinal cancer. Other injuries include skin cancer, cuts, bumps, bruising, drowning, amputation of limbs due to shark bites and getting caught in the bight of the line, anaphylactic shock brought on by poisonous stinging insects and/or fish, pnuemonia, exposure, frostbite, heart attacks, food poisoning, broken bones, snake bite (some sea snakes are extremely dangerous, snakes near water can be deadly too), shock, being knocked unconcious, head injury/brain damage, allergies.
These are some of the injuries I have heard of happening over the 45 years of my outdoors enjoyment. There are bound to be others to be sure, some more common than others. Quite a few of these I have learned from watching outdoors programs that are filled with useful trivia, others are from personal observation and past experience (except drowning obviously).

Good health insurance is preffered for outdoorsman. No explanation needed.

one of the worst injuries that a fisherman can and will get is the trailer hitch bite. it usually occurs just below the knee on the part that there is hardly any flesh and just bone. it happens when a fisherman walks around the back of the truck and forgets that the hitch is in place and runs right into a blunt piece of hardened steel.
i got my first one of the season last Friday and I'm still limping.
another nasty is the spinner bait in the middle of the back. really bad when not using barbless hooks.
i taught a buddy to fly-fish and spent the better part of the day with a black leach pattern stuck right between my eyes. it required 7 stitches and i have the scar to this day.
the worst i have seen is a fellow (i was not fishing with him) that got mauled by a grizzly in northern British Columbia. his fishing buddies got him to a first aid post but he passed away on the way to Terrace British Columbia on the helicopter.

There are tournaments all over the place sometimes the stake reaches $100,000 with side bets, so I would assume you consider that competitive sport fishing. Since a lot of money is on the line. Usually those tournaments are for mako sharks, blue marlin, king mackerel, swordfish and spearfish. These fish are caught in the deep ocean. Those who fish for gamefish hurt their backs, slip on the deck and hurt their knees, sometimes the hooks going flying out of the fishes mouth. I heard a story about a guy in Massachusetts who was stabbed in the back by a landed agitated swordfish.

Death, more than one deckie has died when they've had a fish at the boat and a big beakie's found its second wind and take off with the poor deckie still attached to the trace.
