I personally believe that as long as music doesn't cause me to stumble, it's ok. Some would say, "can you worship God to this music?" I actually found a J-Lo song that expressed something I was feeling and I sang it as a prayer.
I find that hip hop music often comes with a beat that is very sexual and can awaken lusts within me or cause me to start thinking about things I don't need to be thinking of. Lyrics are more obvious, but be aware of the mood that the music and beats can create. Heavy metal is usually angry, and those who listen to it often are angry at the world. Do the lyrics uplift you? Do they create a positive message or a negative one? Some people like certain types of music because it expresses their frustrations or angers, but I would ask, does it provide hope or does it just vent and stay angry? If there's no hope, you're just complaining and God doesn't like that kind of a spirit.
I think this is a personal choice between you and God. Be honest with yourself about how your music affects your heart and mind and emotions. That is different for everybody.
btw - not all Christian rock is horrible. I personally like the Newsboys and Mercy Me quite a bit. I mostly listen to straight praise music cuz "christian" music is usually just a copy of the secular stuff and it's lame. Lifehouse is pretty good, subtle Christian themes. I listen to country cuz it's pretty clean, but there's not much else that I've found.

If the band is not worshiping God then it is not ok to listen to it. Maybe you should do some research on christian rock. There are a lot of good bands and I bet oyu could find a few you like. Maybe try another type of music if you dont like the rock.

I don't know, if you look at John, chapter 1, verse 22. Jesus clearly states that bands such as "Insane clown possy" are clearly non-christain and should not be listened to. He also says that the only good bands to listen to are clearly subtle and soft opera.

I play in a rock band that specializes in Pink Floyd.
If it doesn't have swearwords or Satanic lyrics it's ok.

Any of them.
Don't you think that the Holy Spirit is stronger than any possible "evil" message that some head-banger band -- or worse yet, some air-head all-girls band -- could expose you to?
Have faith. "He who is within you is greater than he who is within the world."
