The altitude and lower CO2 level has a tranquilizing effect on humans, making them tired and sleepy. A lot of airlines strongly recommend against tranquilizing pets that are flying because of this.

The higher CO2 levels can contribute but with the pressurization of the plane, it causes a tranquilizing effect. As researched with Air Force pilots in decompression chambers, as the altitude increases, so does the pressure, it causes a sort of dizzy, tranquil, sleepy effect on people (which is really bad for Air Force pilots). It can also cause nausea, inability to think clearly, hallucinations, dizziness and inability to preform some motor functions. Although this isn't always the case (depending on altitude and pressurization) it is most of the time the case.

Me too! In my case, because the sound and motion of the plane make me fill like in a rocket-chair with the air conditioner on; so no other sound around, and specially almost nothing else to do. Same thing with the buses on a long trip...

I don't know but consider yourself lucky. A lot of people would love to be in your position. . . especially on longer flights. I can't think of a better way to make the time pass on a flight than to be able to sleep.
