Can someone please explain to me how people can think that walking around with a bunch of teeth missing, or nasty stained teeth is acceptable?
It is so disgusting!

Oh my Goodness, such anger and hatred here! I was not talking about people with health problems, I am talking about people who have very dirty teeth because they just DON'T brush or floss.
I am sorry, but there is NO excuse for not keeping your teeth clean, it is down right NASTY!!!!!
Also, most so called "poor" people put themselves in that postion.

I hate talking to people who have gross teeth; whatever it'd be. Whenever I talk to them, I can't concentrate on the topic, I just stare at their nasty teeth! My teeth are straight and nice and I'm thankful to my mom, wh o paid for my braces-back in the day. EWW. I can't even imagine dating someone with nasty teeth! The people who are getting angry are those who probably are lazy and nasty and are ashamed you posted a question that probably addresses their issue or they're idiots.

Well I just went five days without a shower because our heating fuel ran out and we live in the country and could not get a delivery. However, there is no way that I was dirty or smelly. We boiled saucepans of water on the wood stove and washed every part of our body thoroughly. Putting on deodorant and not have washed at all is pretty gross. There is not need to be dirty. I could NEVER go a day without brushing my teeth. I brush two to three times a day. It is also unhealthy and not good for your gums or teeth to have all those food particles in.

Most people don't have dental insurance and can't afford a dentist. There's only so much flossing and brushing can do. I know a few women who have had their teeth knocked out by abusive husbands--most definitely not their fault!

Just remember: If you hate looking at people with bad teeth, think how much they must hate having the bad teeth to begin with!

I do agree with you 100%. Dental care is inexpensive while your teeth are still healthy. If you let it go for decades, then of course it becomes unaffordable. The only point that I disagree with is that poor people put themselves in that position. I personally know of a single mother with a $3000.00 balance on her brand new home (she poured every dime into her mortgage), has excellent, EXCELLENT credit but was recently diagnosed with MS. Now, she can't work and is living off her credit cards. She has applied for social security but it will take at least 2-3 years before she gets any benefits. This woman may lose her home, her car and ruin her credit. Not her fault.

I live in West Virginia, U.S. and sadly, we have the worst reputation for tooth decay.

One of the biggest reasons is the cost. When you have 2 kids and make $6 an hour, it's a choice between putting food on the table or going to the dentist. Sadly, better-for-you food is more expensive than the stuff you can afford (or is given to you at food pantries)

Another reason is because of culture. Because, for generations, nobody ever went to the dentist, why should I - and it's too expensive anyway.

Another reason is education. Since WV is an impoverished state, people are fortunate to graduate from high school - much less go on to college.People with lower educations, sadly tend to not be as careful with their teeth as they should be.

There are all kinds of other reasons - mostly boiling down to not being able to afford proper dental care.

Sad isn't it? The most industrialized country in the world, with one of the highest standards of living in the world - doesn't have universal medical/dental care for its citizens. We're too busy fighting a war no one wants in countries where we are hated - all for the good of big business.

You're right. It's gross. Fortunately, my partner has his teeth. I don't know if I could kiss him otherwise.

LOL!! I don't think they are doing this because they want to be more attractive. It's a matter of basic economics. Dental work is very expensive and trailer park America simply can't afford to be working on their grills when limited funds are needed just to survive. I doubt they are very happy to have nasty teeth. Again I shouldn't be laughing at the plight of the poor, but the wording of this just makes me LMAO. You should go to England some time.

The amount of hostility this question brought up is ridiculous. I never thought there were so many humorless, self-righteous moralists here.

There are lots of reasons why people don't take care of teeth, but I agree with you. Someone can be very nice looking and then they open their mouth showing missing, nasty teeth and you get turned off.

How ironic you place this question in the "etiquette" section. You have none.
Many people cannot afford dental care. How insensitive of you to discriminate against such people. You should be ashamed of yourself and grateful for your own teeth and the care you can afford for them. How could you think such shallow views of unfortunate people is acceptable?
I know many people with bad teeth who are more beautiful on the inside than many people (with good teeth) are on the outside.

Some people are oblivious about the condition of their teeth and how dangererous poor dental hygiene can be. Others are just poor and cannot afford expensive dental care. Good dental care should be taught in elementary school and free clinics should be available, but this is not a perfect world.

what about the fact that many dont have dental insurance. Can't afford a dentist or just have biological problems? Think before you judge and reveal your real IQ.

I myself have a discolored tooth b/c as I child I was born with pink eye and had to start my first hours on pennicillin (which is largly sugar based) so my teeth didn't have a good start. No insurance and a job that just covers the basics (working on changing that). Your comments were really hurtful.

Here's something new - think before you open your trap ok?

Lady, you piss me off. My dad has a lung disease and doesn't have enough health insurance to cover a dentist too - then he would have to give up his oxygen tank. He cannot work because of his disability so he cannot pay for it in cash.

The people who go around with "nasty" teeth are poor or have a health problem. So just shut up. If you don't like 'em don't look at 'em.
