Ask your vet if they will give you some silver nitrate. It looks like a wood match with the medicine on the end. You just rub it on the bleeding end of the nail and right away it stops bleeding.

It is impossible to see the vein on a black toenail, but be careful as it is very painful to your dog when you clip the vein. Sometimes the vein grows too long in the nail, if this happens take a file to the nail and it will hope push the vein back so you can trim the nails shorter.

I hope this helps.

If you don't have the styptic pencil available you can use flour - like all purpose flour for baking. Put a small pile on a paper plate and dip the nail in it. It will soak up the blood and make it clot. Once the bleeding has stopped, be sure to wash the excess flour off with a warm, soapy rag.

Pet shops or you vet should have something to stop the bleeding although (depending on where you live) it is ovbiously too late for those options....other than that I am not really sure. I have some I think it is called betadine that I was told is good to stop bleeding in pets, but I am not sure about on their toenails hope you get it fixed!

You can use any number of household items to stop the bleeding. Flour will work so will baking soda. Just put it on the nail and add some pressure for a second or 2.

A Styptic pencil (sold at Petco etc) will stop it. But they stop bleeding in less than 10 min IME (your mileage may vary). I really try to never "quick" a dog, but it's very hard to avoid when they wiggle around.

My vet told me to put flour on it if that happens. Also try not to cut their nails to short where they bleed because they can actually bleed to death.
