Can he? - Probably
Should he? - No. There are people better trained for that.

As President, he is Commander in Chief of the military forces, so yes, he technically could take direct command and lead forces on the ground. However, it would be utterly insane to think it is probable, as it would be extreme micromanagement. I'm sure the Generals wouldn't be happy about it, the troops might not be happy about it, the President probably wouldn't know what they were doing (few of them anymore are combat veterans or have much military experience), and the enemy would love to take him out and would probably resort to some extreme tactics to do so.

He does have that authority, but it would be supremely foolish for him to try it. The last president to lead troops into combat while serving as president was George Washington (during the Whiskey Rebellion). Since then, presidents have wisely left military matters to the military (except for during Vietnam and we saw how that turned out).

He can do almost anything he likes so he could but it would be inadvisable because he would be an open target. Why do you ask?
