I feel I need to educate you (and others here but they most likely won't see this).
You spoke of a "monthly fee" to use limewire (or similar P2P software); THAT IS NOT LEGITIMATE! There are sites like this: http://www.download-it-free.com/limewire/
http://netmusicsite.com/
there are numerous others. These are P2P scam sites or "rogue P2P sites". What they do is have you pay a fee to them and then have you download "their software" which is just a copy of a popular open-source P2P program. The developers of the software never see a cent of that fee as well as the artists. Those sites will have a hidden disclaimer that you shouldn't download unlicensed content (but most of the content on P2P is unlicensed). A small part of it is licensed to share (some newer music artist will do that to promote their music).
One of the reasons those sites proliferate is because people feel that since they are paying money it's a legitimate and legal deal.
When you click on the "download" button on those scam sites you'll be taken to a sign up page, they pretty much all look alike. Not much creativity there!
Now there are sites like emusic.com which are legit. One way you can easily tell is that they don't promise that you'll find every song you ever wanted. They deal with independent labels which allow them to sell music cheaper, but there's probably alot from relatively unknown artists. Look in the site's FAQs for a statement along those lines.
Just wanted to clear that up.

Limewire is definitely illegal when you don't pay once a month. I think Limewire is still illegal when you pay per month, but I'm not entirely sure. Most of the time when you pay for downloading songs, you pay by song, not by month. So I'm still guessing that Limewire is illegal.
There are a couple of softwares that you can buy that are not illegal, but they can get pretty pricey. One software I know for sure that you can buy is Itunes. You automatically get that software when you buy a Ipod or any Ipod mp3s. For every song, it's about a dollar, but you have to pay by credit card. The reason it's pricey is because that you have to buy a pretty expensive Ipod. I don't know if you can buy the software without buying the Ipod, but I guess you can ask the store about that.

Think of Limewire as a gun. It is legal to own a gun. But it is not legal to use the gun to rob your neighbor.
Limewire itself is legal. But using it to download copyrighted material for which you do not pay is illegal. The paid services for Limewire will offer you some legal material. But it is material that you can download from a hundred "free" sites without Limewire. So it is not worth the monthly fee.
The paid service will NOT let you legally download the lastest popular songs, new movies, etc. 99% of what they offer is junk. But it will let you illegally download the material just like the unpaid version of Limewire, and not warn you which you are doing. So you will find yourself download illegal things without knowing it.
If you want a paid service, sign up for iTune or one of the other fully legal sites. Pay the pennies each to download the music properly, and keep yourself out of jail and your mother happy.

Limewire itself is legal, there are files on limewire that are not copyrighted that are legal to download, the problem is that most of the files are copyrighted not to mention that when you download from a file share program, you increase your chances of downloading a virus. Limewire is notorious for virus infections.
Play it safe and use iTunes or napster

It's like asking if trucks are illegal. Of course they are not. But if you use them to contraband illegal products, you are breaking the law. As for me, I don't really care along with thousands of people...
LimeWire as a program is not illegal and you can actually use it legally, but if you donwload copyrighted stuff, you are naughty.
I use LimeWire about once a month.

Yes, most of the stuff you get off Limewire is copyrighted material, so downloading it and sharing it are illegal.
The program your looking for? It's called iTunes.

limewire is NOT illegal. It's p2p software, and nothing about it is illegal. You can download copyrighted content with it but that does not make it illegal. You can download about every song ever made straight from google. With this command:
intitle:"index.of" (mp3) name.of.song -html -htlm -cf -jsp
movie:
-inurl:php -inurl:asp -inurl:htm -inurl:pdf -inurl:html intitle:"index of" (avi|mpg|mpeg|mp4) TITLE
files:
-inurl:php -inurl:asp -inurl:htm -inurl:pdf -inurl:html intitle:"index of" (zip|rar|exe) FILENAME

Limeware was originally illegal because it gave free songs, while other sites sell them. Personally, if you pay a fee it is not illegal.
