We just moved into a house and I found out that we have poison ivy and probably poison oak in the backyard where my dogs run around. Now one of my dogs is itching his butt and it looks really bad. I thought at first it may have been allergies but I gave him some medicine and it still doesn't help. I've already made an appointment for him to go to the vets this Friday so it seems like he is suffering and I want him to feel better. What can I do or give him to make him better? Is there anything for dogs that cures poison ivy (or oak)? Thanks!

And if they can't get that, what in the world could it be?
Is there something that would make him feel better until we get to the vets?

Dogs can get poison ivy like people, but their fur may protect them. You can wash the area and put Aloe on it, but I hesitate to suggest Calamine or drugs until you talk to the Vet, because I don't know what happens if he licks it.

Absolutely. Our cats sometimes get into poison ivy and we get a rash from it, which has lead to my wife bathing any cat that escapes the house.

Can Dogs Get Poison Oak

No they cant. But If you touch him you can. I get poision ivy from my dog all the time but they are immuded to it.

It's most likely dried skin or maybe it's butt is irratated. He could also just be cleaning himself.

the fur protects them from it, from the most part, areas not covered in fur can get it easily.. if it gets down to the skin, your dog can get it.... if your dog gets it on his fur, you can catch it from him!!

I dont know what would be safe to use on a dog.. you may want to contact a vet.. the more your dog itches, the worse it will get.
