You have your child for the specified visitation time and the last day has come and you have to have your child home to her mom's house by 6. The mom says she isn't going to be there because she has to go to school and is unwilling to make arrangements with any family members to have the child taken there. What would/can you do?

The best thing to do is to find out when the mother will be home and keep them until then. Nobody's going to come after you because you didn't have them home on time if she's not there to get them but make sure you have these conversations with her via email so you have a written record that she is doing this.

I have taken the child home early, as much as it hurts, because it is safer to do that then be late.
Even if she may be in the wrong for not accomadating, especially if it is cutting into your hours.
But defitnately log that down.
And bring it up. To whom ever will listen.

Do not allow her to continue that behavior. Regardless if she claims she has to do her things too. Remember everyone needs to understand that the child needs to spend quantity and quality time with both parents.

Put what she said down in writting and show it to the judge if she tries to say you didn't bring him there in time. Also stay there at her house, with your kid, outside her door until she get's there.
