I am appalled!!!

Our idiot governor will set this state back 200 years. What does this mean for our children?

"Antievolutionist appointed to head Texas state board of education.

On July 17, 2007, Don McLeroy was appointed by Texas governor Rick Perry (R) to chair the state board of education, succeeding Geraldine Miller. A member of the board for the last eight years, McLeroy was described by the Dallas Morning News (July 18, 2007) as "aligned with social conservative groups known for their strong stands on evolution, sexual abstinence and other heated topics covered in textbooks" and as "[o]ne of four board members who voted against current high school biology books because of their failure to list weaknesses in the theory of evolution."

"In a statement issued on July 17, 2007, Texas Freedom Network's president Kathy Miller chided Governor Perry for his choice, writing, "Texas parents should be troubled that the governor has appointed as head of the state board a clear ideologue who has repeatedly put his own personal and political agendas ahead of sound science, good health and solid textbooks for students. Even worse, Mr. McLeroy will now be in charge of the board's scheduled revision of the state's science curriculum standards, an area where he has already cast his lot with extremists who want to censor what our schoolchildren learn."

Hey living in Texas, I'm happy he did, but NOT because I believe it was a good choice.

Rather, Texans need to wake up. They seem mostly oblivious to the near criminal activities of their kleptocratic form of Gov't.

Texans as a rule seem to give knee jerk support to asinine policies like this in the name of defending Texas pride.

They just refuse to think, lest they besmirch the good name of the state of Texas.

Hello? After 20yrs of this nonsense, Texas is competing with Alabama and Mississippi for the ignorance and poverty levels.

If Texans are going to wake up, it's going to take many of these types of idiotic policies before they realize they're state pride has blinded them to how foolish their leaders have made Texas look to rest of the nation.

Well, first off he is not the only vote/decision on anything. He has others that he must sway to his side of the fence. So I don't think that Texas is in any danger of becoming the first state to ban evolution in its schools, and teach "creationism" or whatever the religious right wishes to call religion to get it by the courts. Second of all, even if the man gets anything into schools, it will not withstand an appeal in any court of law. Creationism isn't a recognized individual science in itself - it is recognized as religion. And there is that pesky thing in the constitution dealing with the separation of church and state. So as long as the schools are funded by government money, then they can't teach religion. Finally, he was one of four to vote against the current books. This means that there weren't enough votes to ban them, and they are in use. Right now the law is on the side of evolution, until something can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the way the bible describes how the world began actually is the truth. Until then, it will be religion, and will remain out of the text books. Sorry, religious zealots. . .

I hope it means that other options besides the ones the liberals want taught will now be taught ALSO. If you are so concerned about good health, then you would know abstinence is the only thing that guarantees it. Name one form of birth control that is 100% guaranteed against unwanted pregnancies, HIV or other STDs. You cannot unless you include abstinence. Don't you think children would be better able to make decent choices if all options are offered to them on some subjects? It seems that religious people are not the only ones who have closed their minds. I don't want schools endorsing a religion, but I do want other options presented and ID is considered a reasonable option by many people, including some scientists.

EDIT: To ReeRee. You live in New York yet are against what's happening in TX? Are you aware that your stinking liberal state has endorsed islam by opening a Muslim Public School? This school has, along with a regular school board, a religious school board. Your taxes are being used to promote islam. What is wrong with New Yorkers?

God Bless.

I suppose they'll start using the buy-bull as their science & history book. When I was in school, one of our teachers set up a debate between creation & evolution. To expand our minds a bit, he actually had a preacher's daughter on the pro-evolution theory. Believe it or not, she did have very good arguments eventhough it went completely against her personal beliefs. It was a very interesting class. I wish they still did stuff like that.

I'm sure when Darwin first introduced his "ignorant" theory that plenty of parents were incensed that anyone could be allowed to ponder such lies. I know for a fact that when I was in high school back in the 80's that teachers were appalled that they were having to teach such a wacky "theory" as evolution. I mean really, who could believe that any human could evolve from an ape. now that's insane. I don't really care for Perry, but it sounds like he finally did something right, GOD BLESS TEXAS!!!

***Someone from New York calling us ignorant!!! NOW THAT"S FUNNY!!!!*** Look at the Taxes and Government crap y'all put up with. If I heard right on the news your mayor wants to tax you for driving in certain parts of the Big Apple. Now that's ignorant to me.

So, let me get this straight.
You would be against children having books that might list weaknesses in the theory of evolution?
So, if there are weaknesses in the theory, we don't want our kids to know this??
Why, exactly, is that?

I am shocked at the level of ignorance demonstrated in the answers. What the heck happened to the U.S.? Or was it always populated by ignorant, bible thumping, intolerant jackasses? I didn't used to think so. I am worried about our country. And people its not a popularity contest what gets taught as science. Its not like you decide horoscope casting is superior to biology. Evolution is not going away. It is a widely demonstrated and supported theory, much of what we understand in biology and modern medicine is through evolution.

No offense meant to you personally, sweetie, but - it IS Texas. Why are you appalled at anything that happens there? I'm up in NY, and nothing that goes on in Texas surprises me anymore. It almost seems as though the Lone Star state is a haven for rednecks and religious fruits and nuts of every kind.

It does suck mightily, though.

Watch this - maybe it will make you laugh and feel better.
