It's got to be the Chauchat -- a light French machine gun used in WWI by the allies. It suffered from many undesirable characteristics and was pretty much universally despised by the troops that used it.

(Ironically, America had a great machine gun waiting in the wings with the Browning Automatic Rifle or BAR. The US Army was hesitant to bring it into combat though for fear of the Germans copying the design.)

I will second Amos S. That Turkey was known as the "Davy Crockett" there is a story on the 3rd Armors web site about a guy explaining the weapon to President Kennedy at Fliegerhorst Kaserne in 63 on the "Ich bin eine Berliner" trip. Evidently he had them removed from the field almost as soon as he got back to DC.

Since the Chauchat was already mentioned, I'll mention another weapon that made no sense. The nuclear ASROC made absolutely no sense. Anyone that would have fired one of those may destroy the submarine they were after, and their own ship in the process.

Hatred.

Combined with it's echo, Intolerance are the source of all conflict. Religion is often used to justify hatred, sometimes skin color, whatever. Hatred by itself will destroy the hater. But Intolerance causes the hater to cross over borders and murder innocents. Extremists of all stripes are driven by this:the Nazis, the Palestinians, Hezbollah, all of them are intolerant of people who live lives on their own terms.

A lot of them will quickly vote this a thumbs down, too. The truth hurts.

Probably a lot of answers. Our WW1 doughboys didn't have a lot of use for the French-made Chauchat machine gun that they were given to use.
