NEF makes a good inexpensive single shot, better than the Rossi from what I know.
Get a .270, .30-06 or .308 as suggested for whitetail and all other game. You will be much happier with the ammo selection available for years to come.
BTW, 1 inch groups at 100 yards is better than most people can shoot offhand. Think about what a deer's kill zone is....

I'm the person who suggested that you but the NEF Handi Rifle in the first place. What ever you are hearing about the NEF being bad or shooting poor groups is a lot of B.S. Rossi doesn't make a 25-06 anyway. I have literally dozens of customers who have bought these NEF's for themselves or family members and NOT ONE of them has ever had anything but praise for their quality or their accuracy. I have personally shot the .223,.308,30-06,and the 270. NEF doesn't have a 25-06 caliber. They all produced tight groups, along with a mid-range scope you can't possibly make a better choice. They are made here in the U.S. and not oversea's and their customer service is second to none. There is NO BETTER rifle made in this price range anywhere. Everybody on here has opinions and about 65% have no actual experience with any of these guns in the first place. The choice is up to you at this point. I won't waste any more of your time trying to give you good information if you'd rather listen to dribble and baseless fairy tales...

I just bought a Rossi 3 gun set for my daughter. It came with a .243 rifle barrel. I was very suprised at the quality and how well it shot. I spent about 300 for it. I all ready had a scope for it. So I took it out and sighted it in. It's a really fun gun to shoot. There are a lot of options for them. Different stocks, bull barrels. My gun dealer has one with the bull barrel and his shot great. His however was in .270. I don't know anything about the New England, but the Rossi is a good gun and a great value.

handi rifles are not bad for an inexpensive single shot, personally dont like the feel or finish, take a look at remington 710, or 770 bolt actions very near in price to an handirifle, and they come with qa scope mounted an bore sighted, just add ammo sight in an hunt, mossberg also has a line of bolt actions in this price range accuracy is subjective to the shooter an ammo used, considering most game is taken under 200 yds 1" group at 100 yds is fine. deer vitals are roughly 8" in diameter, that being said practice practice practice, thompson center makes a great single shot in the encore or g2 contender about twice as much as a handi rifle but twice the rifle in my opion

Handi-Rifles are not high-grade target rifles, but they can shoot real good.
It might take a bit of tinkering, trigger adjustment, and load development, but 1" hundred yard groups are not beyond possibility. I didn't say probably, but possible.
I've shot Handi-Rifles in .30-30 WCF, .357 Magnum, .45-70 Gov't and .30-'06 Sprfld. All of them shoot better than you'd expect such an inexpensive rifle to shoot, and recoil was not excessive.
You can have multiple barrels fitted to your Handi-Rifle, a friend has six different barrels fitted to his Handi-Rifle receiver.

The .25-06 is a stellar deer rifle. Get a Remington 700. You won't regret it.

It really depends what range you're talking about. A 1" group at 100 yds. is plenty accurate for deer. Also, at 100 yds. a 25-06 is somewhat overpowered. The bullet will most likely pass through w/o much expansion meaning minimal tissue damage. If you're talking 250+ yds. then yes a 25-06 is just about perfect, but then you'll need better accuracy.
Just my opinion, but if I were looking for a deer rifle for <200 yd shooting, I would seriously look at a bolt rifle, Ruger or Savage in 7mm-08 Remington.

don't get a single shot, get either Remington or moss berg. here are two links for the rifles I'm considering.

or

don't get .25/06, it burns a lot of powder and it is a relatively small bullet. the smallest i would get would be a .270. i recommend getting either a .270, .30/06, 7mm or a .308.
good luck.

I have the NE SB2 in 30.06. I have to send the receiver in to get it fitted for another barrel seems NE doesn't like worrying about someone getting the headspace wrong..
I am planning on getting the vent rib shotgun barrel but they have a pretty good list
http://www.hr1871.com/Support/accessoryProgram.aspx
25.06 not on list. 270 is.
