Do you think people fear death because of the fear of a hell or fear of nonexistance or a fear of the unknown or combination of all these things? Also, why do so many people who claim to be Christians fear death just as much as people who claim to not believe in God at all?

I dont fear death it will be welcomed when that time comes. I cant be late or early for it. God has chosen a time and way nothing we can do about it. Do I want to leave my loved ones here? No not really but its life. Heaven will be my eternal family. I do my best to lead my family to Christ but they make the final decision. Repent and be baptized all. Peace out................

Ultimately, it's really a fear of the unknown... Even those who claim to be Christian probably feel deep down that the idea of going to heaven (knowing that they didn't do anything to deserve that kind of promotion) a little bit 2 good 2 b true. The Bible clearly tells us that death is merely the end of existence. Those who realize that need not fear death.

I imagine there are as many definitions of the fear of death as there are people who fear it
I am not fearful of death, per se, but I confess I am a bit fearful of the process of dying... (the last moments of life)
I would think the fear of death is mostly about the unknown on the other side, but I can also see some fearing that death will bring them to hell, which is frightening enough on its own.

It could be a combination of those things, but it could also be the fear of facing the pain leading up to death, or the fear of leaving your loved ones behind. As a Catholic Christian, I am more afraid of leaving behind my friends and family than of actually dying. I guess what I'm trying to say is that fear of death is not as simple as fear of hell or the unknown. There is pain, separation, judgment, and, underlying all that, Christians probably have a deeper awareness of their sinfulness than most others.

I'm a Christian. My main fear of death is in regards to the suffering and pain involved while dying. I'm not afraid of what happens after I die.

Another fear I have is that some of the people I love won't be there and I'll just be really sad for them.

When I was younger, I used to be afraid that I would be bored in Heaven. Playing a harp while sitting a cloud naked for all eternity doesn't sound fun for me. I came to the realization that God knows what we like even better than we do and I don't expect we will just be sitting on a cloud. Earth is a total blast and Heaven is promised to be better.

I forget who said it, but I like what he said: God created the earth in 7 days and it's great. Jesus said that he was going to go and prepare a place for us and He's been working on it for over 2000 years. Earth has got to be like a garbage can compared to what's going on up there!

It is natural for people to fear the unknown and they do so concerning death. Most semi religious people want very badly to believe in heaven but "fear" "what if the clergy was wrong"?
Then we have the religious fanatics (of all religions) who fear nothing at all and have visions of floating on clouds, playing harps and maybe lines of beautiful virgins waiting for a smile.
These are the people to fear while we are alive.

Who said people who do not believe in God fear death? Why do so many people generalize about things of which they know nothing?

my parents were Christians. they looked forward to death, as a release from their suffering. my mother hated knowing she was dying, simply because she loved life so much. for both of them, dying was a long, excruxiating period. i know many people who claim to be Christians are afraid of death, as well as many who claim not to believe in God at all. there are probably many different reasons. they may realize, on their death-bed they could have been better people, for eg.

The fear of non existence and the process of dying. Close you eyes and try to imagine it. It IS interesting that despite centuries of indoctrination, Christians are so unsure of the threats & promises that they have received, they are as fearful as everyone else.

I think people fear death just because we dont know where we are going to end up. We dont know what will be on the other side.
