As people have already said, you go to the appropriate website and make application by filling in the application form. You will be given, or submit your own, password so that in future you can always check your balance. Once it's done, it's so much quicker than doing it by phone and going through goodness knows how many options and punching so many keys with your password, credit card no. expiry date, birthdate, etc. etc. etc.

You can check your balance online by going to your bank (or issuer)'s website and registering for access to view your accounts online.

For example, if you have a Chase Visa, you would go to www.chase.com and register by clicking on "start banking online right now". If the card is issued by MBNA, go to the MBNA website. It all depends on who issues your Visa card.

It should be straightforward once you find the right website and the "register" button.

Yea, just go to the issuers website address and register for on-line banking.
You have to go through a few security measures, so you get a letter through the mail too, with an unique code, which you have to enter on-line.
It will take a few days to start, you should be able to check online within a few days of registering!

Hope this helps

You can almost surely check it at the ATM.

And most banks if not all also allow you to check it online - call their customer service line to find out how if it isn't shown on your statement. You'll have to set up an online access and choose a password.
